How to save Instagram photos and videos: A step-by-step guide

This is a step-by-step guide on how to save Instagram photos or videos from any account.

Unfortunately, Instagram doesn’t have an option to save photos or videos within the app. But there’re some workarounds, and today in this guide we’ll show you a few tricks to get it done.

First and foremost, let’s go to the basics.

If you snap a photo directly through the app before posting it, Instagram lets you to save this photo directly to your camera roll. But you need to activate that option first. Here’s how it works.

Open the Instagram app, tap your profile picture in the lower right corner. From your profile tab, tap the hamburger menu (three horizontal lines) in the upper right corner.

Tap the gear icon to access your “Settings”, then “Account” and finally “Original Photos”. Once you’re there, toggle “Save Original Photos”, it will turn on blue when it’s activated.

As long as this option is turned on, every time you snap a photo through the Instagram app, it will automatically get saved to your camera roll in your mobile device’s photo album app.

For whatever reasons, if you want to save Instagram photos or videos from friends or your favorite celebrities, there’s a way to do that without downloading any third-party app.

How to save photos and videos from Instagram

Look if you go to the App Store or the Google Play Store you’ll find a plethora of apps that promise to save Instagram photos or videos. But, not everybody wants to download another app to their phones just for the sake of download a photo or video.

This method requires a bit of coding knowledge. Don’t be scared we’ll walk you through the steps.

You’ll need a computer, it does not matter if it’s a Windows PC or a Mac.

  • Go to Instagram to your computer
  • Click on the picture or video you want to save

  • Click on the “…” at the upper right corner
  • Then, click on “Go to post”

  • Now right click on the page, and select “View Page Source”

  • It will open a new page on another tab, press Ctrl+F and type “jpg” in the search box.
  • Copy the link with a jpg, make sure to not include the quotation marks (“) found at the beginning and the end of the link.
  • Open a new tab and paste the link
  • The image will show up, and you’ll be able to right click and save it.

All the steps mentioned above apply for videos, with the only exception of typing “mp4” instead of “jpg” in the search box.
