Later this year, your iPhone could replace a few more items in your pocket. Apple is rolling out a feature called Digital ID in iOS 26, allowing U.S. passport holders to store their passports in the Wallet app.

It’s a solid step toward turning your iPhone into the hub for your identity and travel. Digital ID builds on the driver’s license integration Apple introduced in Wallet a few years ago.

Once it’s live, you’ll be able to show your digital passport at TSA checkpoints, confirm your age in apps and stores, and complete certain online verifications without needing to dig out your physical documents.

It’s a convenience upgrade that could save time, reduce paper, and keep your important IDs secure in Apple’s ecosystem.

The rollout timing remains somewhat uncertain, however. Apple updated its feature page to indicate that Digital ID is coming later this year, but removed the previous mention of a software update.

That suggests we might see it in iOS 26.1 or 26.2. The first beta of 26.1 doesn’t include the feature yet, so Apple is likely still testing it carefully.

Features that handle sensitive personal information always get a cautious rollout, and this one is no exception.

What makes Digital ID interesting is its integration into Apple’s ecosystem. Wallet is slowly becoming a central hub for identity, not just payments or boarding passes.

Adding passports is another layer in a long-term strategy: your iPhone increasingly handles key aspects of your life, such as travel, purchases, and identification, all under Apple’s control.

Every addition, like driver’s licenses, boarding passes, keys, and now passports, makes the ecosystem stickier.

For travelers, this will be a practical change, streamlining airport experiences and everyday verification. But for Apple, it’s another quiet move toward making the iPhone indispensable.
