If you’ve ever tried typing on an Apple TV using the default keyboard, you already know the struggle.
That endless horizontal line of letters is like playing a game of digital hopscotch just to search for one movie.
But here’s a game-changer: Apple TV has a “Grid” keyboard layout hiding in the settings, and once you turn it on, you’ll never go back.

Apple TV nails a lot of things: the screensavers, the seamless AirPlay, and even its minimalist remote (when you’re not accidentally swiping past what you meant to click).
But the default linear keyboard layout is painfully slow. The UI feels like a step backward, especially for those of us who’ve used a keyboard since dial-up internet days. Thankfully, Grid mode fixes that.

To enable it, head over to Settings > General > Keyboard Layout, and select “Grid.” That’s it.
The difference? Instead of dragging across a single row of letters, you now get a full keyboard-style grid.

It’s much faster to hop between letters, and you’ll immediately feel the improvement the next time you’re typing a long title, entering a password, or searching in the App Store.
The UX improvement is surprisingly satisfying. It feels deliberate and thoughtful—almost like Apple buried this feature just for the power users to discover.
If you’ve ever said out loud, “There has to be a better way to type on this thing,” you weren’t wrong. There is. And it’s already built in.
So, the next time you’re fumbling through the alphabet just to search for Severance or Foundation, take 30 seconds and make the switch. Your thumbs will thank you.
