Your iPhone has always been pretty good at letting you control how much data apps can access.
You could prevent apps from tracking your data and from accessing your location, microphone, and camera without good reason.
However, before iOS 18, when an app asked for access to your contacts, you had a tough choice: allow it to access your entire address book or deny it completely.
This will change with iOS 18, which lets you grant apps access to just a few selected contacts. You can decide which contacts to share with an app rather than giving it access to all your contacts.

When apps have unrestricted access to your contacts, they tend to scrape all the data they can and store it on remote servers for an indefinite period, a practice that should make us all more cautious and aware.
While some apps respect your privacy and avoid unnecessary data collection, many popular ones do not. Social media apps like Facebook, Gmail, Instagram, and TikTok are prime examples.
They ask for access to your contacts under the pretense of connecting you with friends. Once access is granted, they scrape your entire address book, knowing exactly who you’re connected to.
Remember, limiting access to your data is crucial. If you’re using an app to chat with just a few people, you should be able to share only those contacts, a choice that should reassure you about your privacy.
You can also go the extra mile to protect your contacts by locking and hiding the app behind Face ID, one of the new security features and by far my favorite one coming to iOS 18.
Wrap Up
Thankfully, iOS 18 will make this easy and give you greater control over your privacy. This update will be a significant step forward in protecting your data and ensuring that your digital interactions are more secure and private.
