Apple has published a support document explaining why Spotlight can take hours or even days to finish indexing after a software update, an issue that has become particularly noticeable with the iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27 Golden Gate, and visionOS 27 betas.
The document confirms that indexing speed depends largely on how much data is stored on a device. The process moves faster when the device is idle, plugged into power, and connected to the internet.
Apple notes that an internet connection may be needed to download email or other data that hasn’t yet been pulled locally to the device, which is why connectivity is still required even though the index itself stays on the device.
What the index actually does
Spotlight works by building a local catalog of content across apps, files, messages, and other data so that searches return results almost instantly.
After a major update, that catalog typically needs to be rebuilt or substantially updated to reflect changes in how the new software organizes and interprets data. The larger the library of photos, emails, messages, and documents, the longer that rebuild takes.
Apple designed the process to run quietly in the background without competing with tasks the user is actively doing, which is why it throttles its own activity when the device is in use.
That approach keeps day-to-day performance smooth, but it also means indexing can stretch well beyond what most users expect.
Privacy and where data goes
Apple explicitly states in the support document that the Spotlight index is stored entirely on the device, is not sent to Apple’s servers, and is not shared across a user’s other Apple devices. Each device maintains its own separate index.
For users currently testing the fall software betas, Apple’s guidance is straightforward: leave the device connected to power and Wi-Fi overnight, and avoid heavy use during that period if full search functionality isn’t yet appearing. The public releases of iOS 27 and macOS Golden Gate are expected this fall.
