iOS 27: Apple Finally Ships the Siri Apple Promised Two Years Ago

Apple’s iOS 27 arrives this September, bringing the update the company has owed its users since it first teased a smarter Siri in 2024.

After a public delay, multiple executive shakeups in the AI organization, and a partnership with Google that would have been unthinkable a few years ago, Apple is shipping a version of Siri built on someone else’s foundation model. That detail matters more than any individual feature in this release.

Everything else in iOS 27 the Liquid Glass refinements, the redesigned parental controls, the app-by-app performance tuning is real and worth covering.

But the story of this release is Siri, and specifically the fact that Apple decided the fastest path to a competent assistant ran through Google’s technology rather than its own.

The assistant Apple couldn’t build alone

Siri AI is not an incremental update. Apple rebuilt the assistant’s reasoning layer, gave it a persistent memory of your personal data, and put it in a standalone app with conversation history that syncs across every device you own.

In practice, this is Apple’s answer to ChatGPT and Claude, arriving roughly two years after those products made an old-style Siri look outdated by comparison.

The technical foundation is the headline. Apple’s next-generation Foundation Models, which power Siri AI and the rest of Apple Intelligence in this release, were developed using technology licensed from Google’s Gemini team.

Apple isn’t running Gemini directly. The models are Apple’s own, trained and tuned by Apple. However, the underlying architecture traces back to a deal that would have seemed implausible even eighteen months ago, when Apple and Google were still primarily search-default partners and occasional courtroom opponents.

It’s a pragmatic move, and probably the right one. Apple spent two years trying to get its in-house large language model work to the point where it could power a conversational Siri, and the public verdict, including from people inside Apple, was that it wasn’t there yet.

Licensing Google’s approach let Apple ship this fall instead of slipping the feature again. The cost is a dependency that will follow Apple for years: its flagship AI experience now runs on a foundation it doesn’t fully own.

Apple has also expanded where those models actually run. Private Cloud Compute, the on-device-and-server privacy architecture Apple introduced for Apple Intelligence, has historically lived entirely on Apple’s own hardware in Apple’s own data centers.

With iOS 27, some of that workload moves to Google Cloud, running on Nvidia chips rather than Apple silicon. Apple says the privacy guarantees carry over unchanged: data still isn’t accessible to Apple, Google, or anyone else, but the optics are notable for a company that has spent a decade building its brand on vertical control of its own stack.

What Siri can actually do now

Set the backend story aside for a moment, because the feature itself is a genuine leap. Siri AI can hold a real back-and-forth conversation, remember what you asked two exchanges ago, and chain multiple tasks into a single request.

Apple is marketing four capabilities as pillars of the new Siri, each addressing a specific complaint people have had about the assistant for a decade.

The first is personal context. Apple rebuilt its semantic search index so Siri can reach into Mail, Messages, Notes, Reminders, Calendar, and Photos and actually understand what’s there, not just match keywords.

Ask Siri what movie your brother recommended last week, or which restaurant you ate at in February, and it searches your own data the way a person would remember it by association, not by exact phrasing.

This is the feature Apple needed five years ago. Google Assistant and even basic search on Android have offered some version of contextual recall for a while. Apple is catching up, not innovating, but catching up matters when the gap has been this visible.

The second pillar is broad world knowledge. Siri can now go out to the web for answers, as ChatGPT or Perplexity does, rather than punting to a web browser or, worse, saying it doesn’t understand the question. Trip planning, recipe suggestions, quick math, sports scores: all of it routes through Siri now instead of forcing a manual search.

Third is onscreen awareness. Siri can see whatever’s on your display and answer questions about it without you having to describe what you’re looking at. This is the feature that closes the loop with Visual Intelligence, and it’s arguably the most useful day-to-day addition in the release, because it removes a step that used to require switching apps or copying text.

The fourth pillar, App Actions, is the one to watch. Siri can now execute tasks inside apps on your behalf, drafting a reply, moving a meeting, sending a batch of photos, provided the app has built support for it. Apple is positioning this as agentic, and it is, within limits.

The framework depends entirely on developer adoption, and Apple’s track record with developer-dependent frameworks (App Clips, Siri Shortcuts intents before this update, widgets before people actually built good ones) is mixed. The feature will be as good as the apps that support it, and on day one, that list will be short.

Siri App and New Spotlight Search

Apple gave Siri its own app for the first time, with a card-based history of past conversations and a pin feature for the ones you revisit. It’s available on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Vision Pro, and conversations sync across them: start a request on your Mac and finish it on your iPhone.

That syncing detail is a small thing that will matter enormously in daily use, and it’s the kind of cross-device continuity Apple has generally been good at shipping once it commits to a feature.

The old Spotlight search sheet is gone, replaced by a unified Search or Ask interface that lives in the Dynamic Island. Swipe down from the center of the screen, and you get one box that either searches your phone or asks Siri a question, depending on what you type.

Responses first appear as a compact bubble in the Dynamic Island, with the option to swipe down for the full answer or to ask a follow-up. It’s a sensible consolidation of what used to be two separate mental models search versus assistant into one.

The custom Siri voice, available only on iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone Air, is a smaller story but tells you something about where Apple’s on-device ambitions are headed. Those two phones get a more powerful local model that can adjust the pace and expressiveness of Siri’s voice and also improves dictation accuracy system-wide.

Everyone else gets the cloud-assisted version. Expect that gap between “phones with the newest on-device model” and “everyone else” to widen with each iPhone generation from here. Apple Intelligence is quietly becoming a hardware upsell in a way it wasn’t in its first two years.

There’s a real limitation worth flagging before anyone gets too excited: Siri AI launches in English only, with other languages promised later, and it won’t be available in the European Union at launch because of an unresolved conflict with the Digital Markets Act. It’s also absent from China.

For a feature Apple is selling as the centerpiece of the release, that’s a meaningfully narrow rollout, and it echoes the staggered Apple Intelligence launch in 2024, which frustrated many international customers who bought new iPhones expecting features that took months to arrive.

Visual Intelligence Moves Into the Camera

Apple relocated Visual Intelligence out of the Camera Control button and into the Camera app itself, as a dedicated Siri Mode sitting alongside Photo and Video. Point your phone at something, swipe into that mode, and Siri tells you what you’re looking at.

The framing has changed from “a separate tool you have to remember exists” to “a camera mode you’ll stumble into naturally,” which is the right instinct. Visual Intelligence was underused in iOS 26 largely because nobody thought to reach for it.

The party trick here is that Siri now handles the follow-up questions itself. In the previous version, anything beyond basic object identification got handed off to ChatGPT, which meant leaving Apple’s own interface to get a real answer.

That handoff is now gone. Ask about the nutritional profile of a meal, split a restaurant bill and calculate what everyone owes through Apple Cash, pull contacts from a photographed business card, or turn a paper ticket into a Wallet pass, and Siri does it inline. Every one of those interactions gets logged in the Siri app, with a retention setting you control: a month, a year, or indefinitely.

None of this is conceptually new. Google Lens has done visual search with contextual follow-ups for years, and Apple is explicitly closing a gap rather than opening one. What’s different is the integration: because Siri AI now has access to your calendar, mail, and messages, a photo of a flyer can become a calendar event without you having to open another app.

Photos App Upgrades

The Photos app picks up three AI tools worth using regularly, not just demoing once. Clean Up got a real upgrade. It now reconstructs backgrounds with generative fill rather than just erasing and blurring, and Apple offers Fast, High Quality, and Auto modes depending on the scene’s complexity.

Extend lets you pull a photo’s borders outward and generates new image content to fill the gap, useful for turning an awkwardly cropped shot into a proper lock screen wallpaper. Apple uses the same tool automatically when a wallpaper doesn’t fit the display.

Reframe is the most technically interesting of the three: it uses the spatial depth data the iPhone already captures at the moment of shooting, combined with generative fill, to shift the apparent camera angle after the fact.

Whether that reads as “helpful” or “your photos are no longer records of what happened” depends on how comfortable you are with generative fill quietly becoming a standard editing step rather than a novelty.

Apple isn’t alone in this. Google’s Magic Editor does something similar on Pixel phones, but Apple’s version is arriving with less fanfare and, notably, no visible watermark or metadata flag on edited images that the company has publicized. That’s worth watching as this feature reaches a mainstream audience that won’t necessarily know a photo has been generatively altered.

Smaller but genuinely useful additions round out the app: star ratings and keyword tagging for organizing a large library, a “Captured by Me” collection that filters out screenshots and saved images, and full-resolution shared albums that finally work properly with Android and Windows contributors a limitation that’s been mildly embarrassing for Apple given how often mixed-platform families and friend groups run into it.

Liquid Glass, One Year Later

Apple is giving its Liquid Glass design its first real tune-up. A new translucency slider in Settings lets you dial in the exact look you want, switching from a clear glass effect to a darker, more solid tint. It’s essentially Apple admitting that the original version was a bit too cluttered and tough to read over certain wallpapers.

That’s a reasonable response to a year of feedback, and it’s a pattern Apple has followed before: ship a bold visual redesign, then spend the following release quietly making it more legible.

Beyond the slider, Apple improved how the interface handles complex content sitting behind navigation bars and menus, with better diffusion and stronger edge contrast so controls read clearly against busy backgrounds. App icons picked up additional glass layering for more visual depth, and the effect is most noticeable on icons like Maps, which now has noticeably more dimensionality than its iOS 26 counterpart.

The lock screen benefits from the same generative-fill technology used in Photos. A cropped or mismatched wallpaper can now be automatically extended to fill the display, and Image Playground can generate custom wallpapers directly.

There’s also a new compact clock option that shrinks the time and pushes it up alongside the date, leaving more of the wallpaper actually visible, which is a small concession to people who complained that the redesigned lock screen buried their photos under oversized typography.

Safari and Shortcuts

Safari’s biggest addition is automatic tab organization. It groups your open tabs by topic without you asking, which is either a convenience or a mild annoyance depending on how deliberately you already manage tabs.

More interesting is Notify Me, a page-monitoring feature that checks a site on a schedule (hourly at the fastest) and alerts you when something changes, aimed squarely at concert tickets and restocks. It’s a feature third-party browser extensions have offered for years, now built into the browser, which is generally how Apple adopts successful utilities.

Safari can also generate its own extensions from a plain-language description. Type “give this page 90s-website styling” or “build me a citation generator,” and Apple Intelligence writes and installs a working extension. It’s a genuinely clever use of generative AI for something narrow and low-stakes, in contrast to Siri’s much higher-stakes access to personal data.

Shortcuts follows the same logic at a larger scale: describe an automation in plain language, and the app assembles the actions itself, with a follow-up “describe a change” interface for refining it. Manual editing is still there for anyone who wants it.

This is Apple meeting non-technical users where the old Shortcuts app never did. Its steepest criticism for a decade was that it required a programmer’s mental model to use well, and natural-language creation is a real fix rather than a cosmetic one.

Performance

The biggest improvement in iOS 27 might feature no AI at all. Apple reworked the CPU scheduler, rebuilt the Spotlight search index, and optimized core system tasks—extending performance gains all the way back to the five-year-old iPhone 11. The updates deliver up to 30% faster app launches, 80% faster AirDrop transfers, and 70% quicker loading for new photos in large libraries.

You have to take Apple’s internal testing figures with a grain of salt, but this kind of broad, low-key tune-up across older devices is classic Apple. It’s the exact type of update the company pushes out to earn back user goodwill after rolling out a massive visual overhaul.

It’s also a quiet rebuttal to the recurring complaint that Apple slows down old phones with new software. An iPhone 11 Pro Max running iOS 27 is, by Apple’s account, faster in daily use than the same phone on iOS 26. Whether that holds up under third-party testing once the update ships widely is the thing to watch in late September.

The networking fix is smaller in scope but bigger in daily annoyance: iPhones are now better at deciding when to hand off between Wi-Fi and cellular, which should mean fewer dropped calls and stalled messages during the exact moment you’re walking out your front door. It’s the kind of bug nobody files a report about because it just feels like “sometimes my phone is slow to reconnect,” and it’s been a low-grade irritant on iOS for years.

Messages and Mail Improvements

Messages is adding quick action suggestions to your chats. When someone asks for a photo, the app suggests attaching one, and when someone mentions an event, it offers to add it to your Calendar. Nothing sends without your approval, giving Apple’s take a cautious, manual touch compared to similar Android features.

The more substantial addition is Write with Siri, available system-wide but especially prominent in Messages and Mail, where it can draft a reply, adjust tone, or shorten a message while matching how you actually write.

Apple says it learns your style rather than defaulting to generic assistant prose, which, if it holds up, addresses the single biggest complaint about AI-written text: that it all sounds the same regardless of who supposedly wrote it. Smart Replies get the same treatment, tuned to sound like something you’d actually type rather than a customer-service auto-suggestion.

Messages is getting some practical under-the-hood fixes. Failed texts now automatically retry in the background so you don’t have to resend them manually, large media uploads won’t freeze the rest of your chat, and sync between your Apple devices feels noticeably faster and cleaner.

These are the unglamorous fixes that make an app feel trustworthy, and Messages has needed them for a while; anyone who’s watched a conversation freeze mid-upload on a weak connection will recognize the fix immediately.

Mail’s search finally ranks by relevance rather than just recency, which sounds minor until you’ve spent 30 seconds scrolling past marketing emails to find an order confirmation. A long press on any email now surfaces an inline “Ask Siri” option to summarize, track a package, or pull up a confirmation number, without leaving the message.

CarPlay and Home

CarPlay is adding video playback when parked, which automatically flips to audio as soon as you put the car in drive. It sounds a bit niche at first, but it makes a lot of sense if you spend time waiting in driveways or sitting around at EV chargers.

It requires automaker support that, as of this release, doesn’t yet exist, which makes it more of a preview of a future feature than a shipping one. More immediately useful is Siri AI’s full arrival in the car, with conversations that sync to the Siri app so you can pick up a thread you started while driving once you’re back at your desk.

The Home app’s video intelligence is the sleeper feature of this release for anyone with HomeKit cameras. It now writes plain-language summaries of what a camera saw: “a person walked through the room,” “a dog sat on the floor,” and stitches together footage from multiple cameras that captured the same event, so you get one coherent narrative instead of five separate clips.

Notification consolidation means fewer alerts overall, and 4K recording finally arrives for HomeKit Secure Video, years after most third-party camera apps offered it. But the AI features require a 2TB iCloud+ plan, which puts Apple’s most useful new Home capability behind Apple’s most expensive storage tier.

A decision most people will see as Apple monetizing a feature that should arguably be a baseline expectation for a paid HomeKit Secure Video subscription.

Health adds Cycle Tracking support for perimenopause and menopause, a genuinely overdue expansion that Apple has been criticized for lacking, alongside faster data sync and more accurate route mapping for outdoor workouts.

GymKit, previously an Apple Watch exclusive, now works directly from iPhone, letting gym equipment sync workout data without requiring a watch at all a small change that removes a real barrier for the subset of people who don’t wear an Apple Watch but do use a gym.

Wallet’s Insights feature, an expansion of the existing Connected Accounts tool, adds spending breakdowns and tracking of recurring transactions for linked financial accounts, edging Wallet closer to a lightweight budgeting app.

Combined with the new “Create a Pass” tool, which uses Visual Intelligence to convert a photographed physical ticket or membership card into a digital Wallet pass, Apple is making a real push to get more of daily life off paper and out of other apps.

Parental Controls

iOS 27’s parental control overhaul comes as Apple faces growing pressure to give parents more control over what their kids do online. Screen Time now offers a real-time view of the apps and websites children use, while Time Allowances lets parents set limits for categories such as Entertainment, Games, and Social Media.

There’s also Ask to Browse, which requires approval before a child can visit a new website in Safari, borrowing the same basic idea as Ask to Buy for App Store downloads.

The biggest change is that some of these protections are now on by default. Communication Safety, which already blurred nudity in Messages and FaceTime, will now also blur graphic content and violence for anyone under 18 without requiring a parent to turn it on. Parents can also require approval before their child adds a new contact in Messages, FaceTime, or Phone.

None of this is particularly new compared with what Google and Microsoft already offer in their ecosystems. But it marks a notable shift for Apple, which has generally favored narrower, opt-in child-safety features rather than broader protections turned on by default. That approach is becoming harder to maintain as more states move toward app-store age-verification laws.

It’s worth noting what this update doesn’t do. iOS 27 doesn’t add age verification at the OS level or change how Apple determines whether an Apple ID belongs to a child. The system still depends on parents setting up Family Sharing correctly in the first place.

That leaves a gap at the heart of the debate over kids’ online safety. And it’s the same gap lawmakers are increasingly targeting with new age-verification requirements. iOS 27 adds more controls for families who are already in Apple’s system, but it doesn’t change how Apple determines who needs those protections.

Supported Devices

iOS 27 installs on every iPhone capable of running iOS 26, which stretches back to the iPhone 11 and the second-generation iPhone SE, genuinely broad support for a release this ambitious. But that compatibility list is misleading if you only look at it in isolation, because the software update and the actual headline feature are two different products with two different requirement floors.

Apple Intelligence, and by extension Siri AI, requires an iPhone 15 Pro or newer. That means the iPhone 11 gets the performance improvements, the redesigned Messages reliability fixes, and the Liquid Glass refinements but not the assistant Apple is using to sell this release.

Anyone on an iPhone 15 (the non-Pro model), an iPhone 14, or older gets a genuinely nice performance and polish update with none of the AI. That’s a wider gap between “can install this” and “can use the thing it’s named for” than Apple has drawn in past releases, and it’s worth being explicit about before anyone upgrades expecting Siri AI to show up on a phone that doesn’t support it.

Within the Apple Intelligence tier, there’s a second split: the custom Siri voice and the improved on-device dictation are exclusive to iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone Air, thanks to a beefier local model those chips can run.

Everyone else, including current iPhone 16 Pro owners, gets the cloud-routed version of Siri AI, which works, but isn’t the full feature set Apple demoed at WWDC. Expect this three-tier structure no AI, cloud AI, on-device AI to become the normal shape of iPhone feature marketing going forward, the same way storage tiers and camera specs have long separated the base model from the Pro line.

Geography adds a fourth axis. Siri AI ships in English only at launch, with other languages promised later, and it’s absent entirely from the European Union, a consequence of an unresolved conflict with the EU’s Digital Markets Act, and from China.

For a company that sells over a billion iPhones globally, a headline feature unavailable in two of its largest and most regulated markets is a meaningful asterisk, not a footnote, and it’s one Apple has now repeated twice in a row: Apple Intelligence’s original 2024 rollout also lagged badly outside the US.

The Bottom Line

iOS 27 is Apple admitting, functionally if not explicitly, that it couldn’t build a competitive AI assistant fast enough on its own, and that shipping something built partly on Google’s technology beat shipping nothing at all. That’s the trade the whole release turns on.

Everything downstream of it the personal-context search, the onscreen awareness, the app actions, the standalone Siri app is a genuinely large upgrade over what Siri has been for the past decade, and for anyone with an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, it’s likely to change how the phone gets used day to day within the first week.

But the release is uneven by design. If you’re on an eligible phone in a supported language and region, this is probably the most significant Siri update of the platform’s history.

If you’re on an older iPhone, in an unsupported region, or just want the polish, the performance work, the Photos tools, and the Liquid Glass legibility fixes, you’re getting a very good, very ordinary iOS release with none of the AI story attached.

Apple hasn’t drawn the eligibility lines this unevenly before, and how that plays with the large chunk of its install base still on iPhone 14s and 15s will be the thing worth watching once this actually ships in September.
