Apple could be preparing its biggest Apple Watch upgrade in years, and the first signs are hiding in its own software.
Buried in internal code are references to Touch ID, pointing to prototypes of the 2026 Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 with built-in fingerprint authentication.
That would mark the return of Touch ID in Apple’s lineup, but this time it wouldn’t be on an iPhone; it would live on your wrist.

The idea raises an immediate question: where does the sensor go? Apple could slip it into the side button, or follow the route Android phones have taken for years and embed it beneath the display.
However it’s implemented, a fingerprint reader on Apple Watch would remove one of the device’s most frustrating interactions.
Instead of tapping out a passcode on a tiny screen, you’d simply touch the sensor to unlock Apple Pay or sensitive health data.
The same code also points to a brand-new processor labeled T8320, a clear break from the T8310 chip that has powered recent generations.
That matters because the Apple Watch has lagged behind other Apple products on silicon progress. While iPhones and Macs receive annual chip upgrades, the Watch has largely been left behind.
A true new processor could deliver faster performance, smoother animations, and unlock features the current hardware can’t handle.
Even the identifiers for these models are changing, shifting from “Watch7” to “Watch8.” That may sound minor, but it suggests Apple views the 2026 lineup as more than just another iterative refresh.
Combined with supply chain chatter about a redesigned casing, the Series 12 could end up being the most significant overhaul since the Series 4 was introduced in 2018, featuring larger displays.
Touch ID, a new chip, a fresh design, if all of that arrives in 2026, the Apple Watch could be headed for its first true “moment” in years.
Would Touch ID on Apple Watch make you finally ditch your wallet, or is Face ID and passcodes enough for you?
