Apple’s iOS 18.1 update has everyone talking, especially with the hype around Apple Intelligence, the company’s latest step into AI-driven features.
If you’re rocking the iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 16, you’re likely excited about what Apple Intelligence will unlock.
But not everyone is lucky. Millions of iPhone users won’t see these features because their older models can’t handle the new tech.
However, that doesn’t mean the rest of us are left hanging. In fact, iOS 18.1 has many other features that might be just as exciting.
I’ve been using an iPhone for over a decade, and Apple always manages to surprise us with new tools, even when we think we’ve seen it all.
The cool part about this update is that it isn’t just about the future of AI. It’s about making everyday iPhone use even better for everyone.
Call Recording
One of the most requested features for years has finally arrived: call recording. Seriously, I can’t count the number of times I’ve been asked if this was possible.

It’s like one of those things you didn’t know you needed until you really do—whether it’s for that important work call or trying to remember something you said in a conversation.
Even though you’ll need one of those new Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhones to transcribe and summarize those calls, anyone with iOS 18.1 can now record their calls. And it’s about time.
Sleep Apnea Detection
Another exciting addition is sleep apnea detection, which comes with iOS 18.1 and watchOS 11.1.

This one’s a bit more specialized because you’ll need an Apple Watch Series 9 or the newly released Appple Watch Series 10.
Apple is focusing on the health side of things, and this feature will be handy for those struggling with undiagnosed sleep issues.
But like many health features, it’s not available everywhere. It depends on where you live and whether local governments have approved it. Still, it’s a big step toward using tech to improve everyday wellness.
Control Center Changes
Apple continues to refine the Control Center with iOS 18.1, building on the overhaul introduced in iOS 18.
The latest update brings even more customization, including the ability to separate connectivity toggles.
Now, you can add independent Wi-Fi, VPN, AirDrop, and Satellite controls directly to the Control Center, making navigation faster and more convenient. It’s a small but meaningful improvement for daily use.

Apple introduced new widgets for the Level and Measure tools. These are handy for quick tasks like measuring or leveling during home projects.
You can now add them directly to the Control Center, making it easier to access without opening apps.
If you don’t like your Control Center layout, you can reset it to the default by going to Settings > Control Center and tapping Reset Control Center.
This is a quick and easy way to restore your Control Center to its original settings, and you won’t have to worry about making permanent changes.
RCS Support
Now, if you’ve been waiting for RCS support to finally reach your carrier, the good news is that iOS 18.1 is expanding RCS support to even more carriers worldwide.
Apple has been slow to fully adopt this standard, but they’re making progress. Although we’re still waiting on the final list of supported carriers, this is a huge step forward in making messaging smoother across platforms.

Phone Mirroring Drag and Drop
Another neat feature coming our way is the iPhone Mirroring Drag and Drop. If you’re using macOS Sequoia 15.1 alongside iOS 18.1, you’ll finally be able to drag and drop items between your Mac and iPhone while using iPhone Mirroring.
This feature was delayed from earlier software releases, but it’s great to see it arriving now.
For those of us who constantly work between our devices, this adds a layer of convenience that makes multitasking even better.
Wrap Up
So, while the hype around Apple Intelligence is real, iOS 18.1 proves that there’s plenty of value for those who aren’t upgrading to the latest iPhone just yet.
Whether it’s finally being able to record calls or customizing your Control Center, Apple continues to find ways to improve the iPhone experience for everyone, not just those with the latest tech.
In true Apple fashion, they’ve made each of these features feel like a natural evolution of the iOS ecosystem.
