Apple quietly added one of iOS 27‘s most anticipated features in its Release Candidate build: the ability to customize which controls appear in the Camera app.
The update, released to developers on Wednesday, lets users choose from up to a dozen shooting controls and arrange them to their preference, addressing one of the most persistent complaints about the iPhone’s camera interface.
The feature was absent when Apple previewed iOS 27 at WWDC in June, but has now arrived just days before the software’s public release.
It isn’t limited to the new iPhone 18 Pro models either. Apple is bringing it to all iPhones that can run iOS 27, starting with the iPhone 11.
How Camera Customization Works
Users can access the customization interface by tapping the six-circle icon in the bottom-right corner of the Camera app, then selecting the new Edit button in the top-left corner.
An “Add Photo Controls” tray slides up with controls you can pin to the top of the camera view.
Available options vary by iPhone model but can include Flash, Live Photo, Aspect Ratio, Timer, Exposure, Styles, Filters, Depth Control, Night Mode, Center Stage, File Format, and Shared Library. A “Reset to Essentials” button restores the default layout.
The customization options aren’t exclusive to Apple’s latest iPhones. Anyone running iOS 27 on a supported device can rearrange available controls, making frequently used settings such as exposure or file format easier to reach while shooting.
Exactly what appears depends on the hardware. Center Stage and other model-specific features, for example, won’t be available on every iPhone.
Apple has not detailed which controls will be available on each supported model. iOS 27 is scheduled for public release on Monday, September 14.
