Apple on Wednesday announced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, bringing the biggest battery-life improvements the company has ever claimed for a Pro model, along with a new A20 Pro chip, a variable-aperture camera, and a smaller Dynamic Island.
The biggest upgrade is battery life. Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro now matches what the iPhone 17 Pro Max delivered, reaching up to 24 hours of typical use per charge.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max pushes further to 30 hours, which Apple describes as the largest generational battery leap in the Pro line’s history. Fast charging has also improved: the iPhone 18 Pro can reach 50 percent in just 15 minutes.
A20 Pro and Thermal Upgrades
Both models run the new A20 Pro chip, which Apple says delivers up to 40 percent faster sustained performance compared to last year’s A19 Pro. The chip features a 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU, and a 32-core Neural Engine.
To support that extra performance without overheating, Apple tripled the size of the vapor chamber cooling system relative to the iPhone 17 Pro models.
The Dynamic Island is now smaller and can display up to three Live Activities simultaneously, a change that had been widely expected ahead of the announcement.
Variable Aperture Camera
The main 48-megapixel Fusion camera on both models gains variable aperture, meaning the lens physically adjusts its opening depending on conditions.
In low light, the aperture widens to pull in more light; in bright environments or when shooting with a shallow depth of field in mind, it can narrow for greater control.
It’s a feature that has long existed on dedicated cameras and, more recently, on some Android flagships.
Display sizes remain the same: 6.3 inches on the standard Pro and 6.9 inches on the Pro Max. Color options are Black, Silver, Glacier, and Burgundy, with Apple noting that the rear aluminum frame and Ceramic Shield glass are now more closely color-matched than on previous generations.
Pricing and Availability
Pricing starts at $1,199 for the iPhone 18 Pro and $1,299 for the iPhone 18 Pro Max in the United States, increases of $100 over the iPhone 17 Pro lineup.
For the first time, Apple is offering a 2TB storage tier on the Pro models. Pre-orders open Saturday, September 12, with the phones shipping on September 18.
