The New iPad Mini Borrows an iPhone Pro Camera Upgrade, but Its Biggest Benefit May Be Making Everyday Paperwork Easier to Scan

Apple’s redesigned iPad mini is getting a camera upgrade previously reserved for the iPhone Pro and iPad Pro, bringing Adaptive True Tone flash to the smaller tablet for the first time.

The technology uses nine LEDs that automatically adjust their brightness and lighting pattern based on the camera’s focal length, helping illuminate subjects more evenly.

Apple first introduced Adaptive True Tone flash with the iPhone 14 Pro in 2022 before expanding it to the M4 iPad Pro in 2024.

Unlike a conventional flash that produces a fixed burst of light, the adaptive system changes how it distributes illumination to better match what the camera is capturing.

Document scanning gets a boost

The biggest practical improvement comes when scanning documents, something many iPad owners already use their cameras for.

When the camera detects shadows across a document, Adaptive True Tone flash captures multiple images using different lighting patterns and combines them into a clearer scan.

That could make a noticeable difference when scanning receipts, contracts, or paperwork under uneven lighting, where shadows can make text harder to read.

The previous iPad mini already featured a standard True Tone flash, but lacked the more advanced adaptive system. Interestingly, the iPad Air still doesn’t offer the technology.

Beyond the new flash, the rear camera remains largely unchanged. It features a 12-megapixel wide sensor with Smart HDR 4 and supports 4K video recording at up to 60 frames per second.

A bigger upgrade for the iPad mini

The camera improvement arrives alongside one of the most substantial redesigns in the iPad mini’s history.

Apple has replaced the LCD screen with an 8.5-inch OLED display, introduced IP67 water and dust resistance, and made the tablet thinner and lighter.

Inside, the A20 Pro chip delivers a significant performance boost over the previous generation.

Those improvements come at a higher price, however. The new iPad mini starts at $699, up from $599 earlier this year and $499 when the previous model debuted in 2024.

Pre-orders open Wednesday, October 28, with availability beginning November 6.
