Apple says a software update coming early next week will fix Face ID problems affecting the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
The company confirmed the upcoming fix this week, just days after the new iPhones went on sale and reports of unreliable Face ID began surfacing.
Apple didn’t name the update, but iOS 27.0.1 is already being tested internally and is likely to carry the fix.
Face ID can fail repeatedly
The problem can cause Face ID to repeatedly fail to recognize you, forcing additional attempts or requiring your passcode instead.
Reports surfaced less than a week after the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max reached customers, although it’s still unclear how widespread the problem is.
I’ve also seen reports of similar Face ID failures on older iPhones running iOS 27, including the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
The problem has appeared in both the public release and newer iOS 27.2 beta builds, and resetting Face ID doesn’t always resolve it.
Apple has only confirmed a fix for the iPhone 18 Pro models, so we don’t yet know whether the same update will address Face ID problems appearing on older devices.
I’d wait for the update before resetting Face ID
If Face ID has become unreliable on your iPhone 18 Pro, there’s little reason to repeatedly reset and reconfigure it with an official fix only days away.
Apple hasn’t provided a workaround in the meantime. Your passcode remains available whenever Face ID fails, and the upcoming update will appear under Settings > General > Software Update once released.
Apple only said the fix will arrive “early next week,” without giving a specific day.
iOS 27.0.1 would also give Apple its first opportunity to clean up other problems discovered since iOS 27, and the new iPhones arrived earlier this month.
Apple has already released watchOS 27.0.1 to address an Apple Watch restart bug, while iOS 27.2 remains in beta testing.
