Apple’s New AI Feature Has an Infuriating Surprise for Anyone Who Thought Paying $200 for an App Meant They Were Done Paying

Apple’s latest Logic Pro update brings an unwelcome surprise for customers who bought the music production app outright.

The new Intelligent Assistant feature requires an Apple Creator Studio subscription, meaning customers who paid $199.99 for Logic Pro won’t get access unless they start paying a recurring fee.

The restriction became clear with the release of Logic Pro 13.0 on November 5, even though Apple made no mention of a subscription requirement when it first announced the feature in October.

Apple’s Original Announcement Left Out an Important Detail

When Apple introduced Intelligent Assistant last month, it described the feature as requiring macOS 27 Golden Gate and a Mac that can run Apple Intelligence.

Availability was also limited to U.S. English.

There was no indication that existing Logic Pro owners would need to purchase another subscription to use it.

However, the official Logic Pro 13.0 release notes now explicitly require Apple Creator Studio, alongside an Apple Silicon Mac running macOS 27 or later.

The standalone version’s release notes don’t mention Intelligent Assistant at all.

If you’ve owned Logic Pro for years without paying extra for upgrades, charging for new features is a tough pill to swallow.

Why Apple Is Charging Extra for Intelligent Assistant

Unlike many of Logic Pro’s existing features, Intelligent Assistant relies on cloud-based AI processing.

Apple’s support documentation explains that the assistant uses a combination of Apple-developed and third-party AI models to handle requests.

The feature lets music creators perform tasks through natural-language instructions, including starting a new project, automatically configuring a vocal track, and adjusting an existing song.

However, Intelligent Assistant will also have monthly usage limits, with additional charges for customers who want to exceed those allowances.

That ongoing processing cost may help explain why Apple is reserving the feature for subscribers, although the company hasn’t explicitly said so.

Creator Studio costs $12.99 per month or $129 annually in the United States and provides access to Logic Pro, Final Cut Pro, Pixelmator Pro, and several other creative apps.

A Significant Change for Longtime Logic Pro Users

Logic Pro has traditionally stood out for offering professional music production software through a one-time purchase.

Customers could pay once and continue receiving substantial updates without committing to a monthly subscription.

Apple isn’t eliminating that option. The standalone version of Logic Pro remains available and continues to receive updates, including several improvements introduced in version 13.0.

But Intelligent Assistant establishes a clear distinction between the features available to subscribers and those offered to customers who own the app outright.

For existing Creator Studio subscribers, the new assistant is included in their plan, subject to usage limits.

For everyone else, accessing one of Logic Pro’s most prominent new features now means paying Apple again, even after purchasing the software.
