Apple added a quiet change in macOS 26 that will make some Mac users very happy. You can now turn off the transparent menu bar.

The option lives under System Settings > Menu Bar > “Show menu bar background.” When it’s off, the menu bar regains a solid background, no longer blending into your wallpaper.

The effect is subtle, but for many users, it makes the top of the screen easier to read and less distracting.

For years, the translucent menu bar has been a common complaint. It can clash with bright or detailed wallpapers.

Developers and pros who spend hours in front of monitors often prefer a clear separation between the UI and the content.

Some resorted to custom wallpapers or Terminal commands to reduce the transparency. Now, there’s a simple toggle.

Apple didn’t mention this feature at WWDC. It quietly appeared in the second developer beta. But on Reddit and developer forums, the reaction has been loud.

Several users called it one of their most requested features. Others are now requesting similar controls over window corner radius, which remains more exaggerated than some would prefer.

macOS 26 still leans heavily into visual polish. However, this change indicates that Apple is offering more flexibility to users who prioritize focus and consistency. It’s not a dramatic shift, but for a certain group of users, it’s a welcome one.

You don’t need to restart your Mac. Simply flip the switch, and your menu bar returns to its basics.
