The Biggest Complaint About Apple’s iPhone Air May Finally Be Going Away, and Future Buyers Have a Good Reason to Wait

Apple is planning to release the second-generation iPhone Air in the first quarter of 2027, and the upgrade most current owners will notice immediately is the addition of a second rear camera.

Apple’s iPhone Air 2 will add a 48-megapixel Ultra Wide lens alongside its primary Fusion camera, according to GF Securities analyst Jeff Pu.

The dual-camera setup addresses the single-lens restriction that sparked heavy criticism on the original model.

A Camera System That Matches the Price

The original iPhone Air shipped with one rear camera at a premium price, which put it at a disadvantage against both the iPhone 17 Pro and competing Android phones in the same bracket.

Adding an Ultra Wide lens brings the Air in line with what most buyers expect from a modern flagship.

Wide-angle shots, architecture photos, group portraits, and close-up macro photography all rely on that second lens. Without it, the first-generation Air required workarounds that Pro models did not.

Battery and Chip Upgrades Could Shift Daily Habits

Pu expects the iPhone Air 2 to run Apple’s A20 Pro chip, built on TSMC’s 2nm manufacturing process.

The current model uses a 3nm A19 Pro. Smaller manufacturing nodes typically deliver better performance per watt, which in a thin device like the Air translates directly to longer battery life between charges.

A separate report from earlier this month indicated the Air 2 could carry a 3,500mAh battery, an 11 percent increase over the current model.

For a phone that some users have flagged for battery endurance, both changes matter more than raw speed numbers.

Wireless Performance Gets a Second-Generation Overhaul

The Air 2 is expected to upgrade both of Apple’s custom wireless chips, giving the company direct control over speed and battery draw.

A new N2 chip will handle Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread—building on the current N1’s AirDrop and Personal Hotspot improvements—while a C2 modem will take over 5G connectivity from the power-efficient C1X.

Same Screen, Slightly Cleaner Front

Pu expects the 6.5-inch display to carry over unchanged, along with 12GB of RAM and an 18-megapixel Center Stage front camera. One cosmetic adjustment is a slightly smaller Dynamic Island cutout at the top of the screen.

Apple has been incrementally reducing that pill-shaped area across its lineup, and the Air 2 appears to follow that direction.

Apple is expected to release the iPhone Air 2 alongside the standard iPhone 18 and a lower-cost iPhone 18e around March 2027.

The higher-end iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a foldable model Apple is calling iPhone Ultra are on track for a September 2026 launch, continuing a staggered release approach the company began this cycle.
