Apple Is Secretly Building a Robot That Could Make Your Smart Home Feel Straight Out of Sci-Fi

Apple is building a robot that could make your desk feel a little less like a desk.

Early reports suggest the company is working on a tabletop device that looks like an iPad, perched on a swiveling arm, but moves with a kind of personality.

It can follow you around, turn to face whoever is talking, and even try to get your attention if it thinks you’re looking the wrong way. Yes, it is basically a Pixar lamp come to life.

The real charm comes from what Apple wants it to do when it’s awake. The robot can jump into conversations, offer reminders, suggest dinner spots, or even help plan a trip.

Think of it less like a piece of furniture and more like a tiny assistant that lives on your counter.

Apple is apparently working to make interactions feel natural. It wants the robot to remember details, respond to multiple people simultaneously, and behave in ways that seem almost human.

FaceTime is also getting a little futuristic. The robot’s screen can track people around a room, and Apple is testing a way to turn your iPhone into a joystick, allowing you to move it around during calls. Video chats might finally feel like video chats, instead of a bunch of floating heads.

Siri is getting a makeover, too. The assistant will have a visual personality, possibly as a playful version of the Finder logo or a new, entirely animated character.

Apple is clearly betting that personality matters almost as much as intelligence when it comes to this type of device.

Multiple teams at Apple are working together to push the project forward, including those from AI, hardware, and design. The company is also exploring mobile bots, humanoid prototypes, and mechanical arms for stores and factories.

The tabletop robot feels like the first step, a way to demonstrate that Apple can make AI feel alive without coming across as creepy.

If it works, this could be the kind of device people actually want to interact with, a robot that’s smart and a little cheeky.
