Apple is rolling out several updates to Apple Pay with iOS 27. Online checkouts are getting a redesign that makes it easier to switch cards and view reward balances, while in-store shoppers get “Tap to Share” to send loyalty info or view receipt details directly at terminal devices.
Additionally, users can now redeem American Express rewards points at checkout and reload debit card balances directly within the Wallet app.
American Express Cardholders Can Now Pay With Points
American Express cardholders shopping online or in apps will now see a “Use Rewards” option during Apple Pay checkout.
The feature displays the available Membership Rewards balance and lets shoppers apply points toward all or part of a purchase.
American Express values the points at 0.7 cents each through this integration, meaning 10,000 points cover $70 of a transaction.
That redemption rate appears directly in the checkout flow, so users know exactly what they’re getting before confirming.
Switching Cards at Checkout Gets Easier in iOS 27
The Apple Pay checkout screen has a new layout in iOS 27 that changes how users move between cards.
Instead of navigating through menus, shoppers can swipe horizontally across cards on the main payment screen or tap to pull up a full grid of every card stored in Wallet.
Individual card details, including rewards balances, remaining credit, and pay later options, are also visible from that same screen.
The update ships to all iPhone users this fall alongside iOS 27’s public release, which means developers and public beta participants can access it now.
A New In-Store Feature Connects Shoppers Directly to Merchants
Apple is building on its existing Tap to Pay on iPhone infrastructure with a feature called Tap to Share, scheduled to launch this fall.
When a shopper taps their iPhone against a participating merchant’s device, the two phones establish a connection that allows the customer to share contact details, a shipping address, or loyalty program information.
The shopper can also see a live view of their basket, including any discounts or sale prices that have been applied, before completing payment via Apple Pay on their phone.
Apple positions the feature as a way to reduce friction at the register while keeping the transaction on the customer’s device.
Debit Card Top-Ups Are Moving Into Wallet
Later in 2026, iPhone users will be able to add money to supported debit cards without leaving Apple Wallet.
The reload option will appear both inside the Wallet app and during checkout, so users running low on a prepaid or reloadable debit balance can top it up mid-transaction. Apple has not yet named which debit cards will support the feature at launch.
