Tim Cook is back in China for the third time this year to meet with government officials and discuss expanding Apple’s manufacturing and sales operations in one of its most important markets.

The latest discussions in Guangdong come just weeks after Cook stepped down as Apple CEO on September 1, handing the position to John Ternus.

Now serving as executive chairman, Cook is focusing more of his attention on Apple’s relationships with governments around the world.

Cook discusses Apple’s expansion in Guangdong

On October 11, Cook met with Guangdong governor Meng Fanli to discuss strengthening Apple’s presence in the province, which is home to many of its major manufacturing partners.

The talks covered smart manufacturing, additional sales channels, and potential research and development investments. Meng welcomed the possibility of Apple expanding its operations in the region.

The meeting follows two earlier visits to China this year. In March, Cook traveled to Chengdu and Beijing during Apple’s 50th anniversary celebrations and attended the China Development Forum.

He returned in May as part of a delegation of business leaders accompanying President Donald Trump for talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

China remains central to Apple’s manufacturing network and iPhone business, even as the company expands production in India and other countries.

Maintaining strong relationships with Chinese officials will remain an important part of Cook’s responsibilities as executive chairman.
