Trying to Buy Apple’s $1,999 Foldable iPhone Just Got More Complicated as a New Restriction Catches Shoppers by Surprise

Apple is now limiting iPhone Duo purchases to two units per customer in the United States after a chaotic pre-order launch that sold out initial inventory within minutes.

Customers attempting to purchase more than two devices through Apple’s website or the Apple Store app are greeted with the following message:

“A maximum of 2 iPhone Duo can be purchased per customer. Please adjust the total quantity of iPhone Duo in your order before checking out.”

Interestingly, Apple doesn’t display the restriction upfront on its U.S. storefront. Shoppers only discover the limit when they attempt to add a third device to their order.

It’s unclear exactly when the policy took effect. Some customers reported successfully ordering four iPhone Duo units when pre-orders opened October 16, while others claim the two-device restriction was already in place.

Apple had explicitly announced similar purchase limits in China, Singapore, and Hong Kong before pre-orders began, but no such restriction was publicly listed for U.S. customers.

iPhone Duo Shortages Are Already Causing Frustration

Demand for Apple’s first foldable iPhone quickly overwhelmed available inventory when pre-orders opened last Friday.

Launch-day delivery options disappeared within minutes, with many customers receiving estimated shipping dates stretching into November and December.

Apple reportedly knew manufacturing challenges would severely constrain initial supplies but proceeded with pre-orders instead of postponing the launch.

The shortage is also expected to affect customers hoping to purchase the device in person.

Apple Store employees have reportedly been instructed to discourage customers without pre-orders from visiting stores on launch day, October 23, because walk-in inventory is expected to be extremely limited.

That leaves many prospective buyers facing a lengthy wait unless additional stock becomes available.

Some Delivery Estimates Are Improving

There is some encouraging news for customers who managed to place their orders during the initial rush.

Apple has started moving up delivery estimates for certain iPhone Duo pre-orders, suggesting some devices could arrive earlier than their original November or December shipping windows.

However, it’s unclear how many customers will benefit or whether those improvements reflect additional inventory becoming available.

Meanwhile, the new two-unit purchase limit could help prevent buyers from placing large orders while supplies remain constrained.

Apple hasn’t explained why the restriction appeared on its U.S. storefront after pre-orders opened, or whether customers who previously ordered more than two devices will be affected.
