Apple’s first foldable iPhone includes several features not available elsewhere in the lineup, including an under-display camera, a matte inner screen, and new camera modes that take advantage of a display on both sides of the phone.
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 and opens to a 7.6-inch display with 50% more screen area than the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Its 5.4-inch outer display has about 90% of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro and works as a regular iPhone screen when the device is closed.
Apple built the Duo from Grade 5 titanium with a 3D-printed hinge cover. The company says the crease running through the inner display is nearly invisible, both visually and to the touch, and early hands-on impressions have generally found it difficult to spot.
The phone also carries an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance.
Apple hid the camera under the display
The inner FaceTime camera sits beneath the screen and disappears from view when it isn’t being used. Apple hasn’t disclosed its resolution.
The 7.6-inch display has a matte finish, something Apple hasn’t used on an iPhone in years. It cuts down on reflections while making both the crease and under-display camera less noticeable.
The outer screen is covered by Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says provides three times better scratch resistance than the previous generation.
For its main cameras, the Duo gets a 48MP Fusion Main and 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide, along with a 12MP Center Stage camera above the outer display. There’s no dedicated telephoto camera.
Two screens change how the camera works
Duo Preview lets the person in front of the camera see the shot on the outer display while the photographer frames it from the inner screen.
Smart Take handles group photos differently. Once the phone detects that everyone is in position and posing, it can take the photo automatically instead of waiting for someone to press the shutter or set a timer.
The foldable design gives the Duo a built-in stand
The fold also gives the Duo a built-in stand. If you set it on a table at roughly a 90-degree angle, you can play video on the upper screen with controls below. You can also use the same position for a StandBy-style clock or calendar view.
The Duo gets software features no other iPhone has
The inner display can run two apps at once, with the dock and status indicators moved to the right edge. Apple Pencil support is also coming in a software update.
Those additions don’t make the Duo a replacement for everything the iPhone 18 Pro offers. It still lacks the Pro models’ telephoto camera and several of their higher-end camera features.
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999, with preorders opening October 16 and availability beginning October 23.
