Apple Maps just got a whole lot smarter, and if you love discovering new places, you’re going to appreciate this.
With iOS 18, Apple finally fixed one of the most frustrating limitations of Maps, and it’s about time.
Searching in Apple Maps worked for years based on your current location, even when browsing a different area on the map.
Let’s say you’re planning a trip to Seattle from your home in New York. You’d open Apple Maps, start exploring Seattle, and search for “coffee shops.”
But instead of showing you cafes in Seattle, Maps would zoom back to your current location and serve up suggestions in New York. Pretty annoying, right?

That’s exactly what iOS 18 solves. Now, when you search for a place while browsing a specific area on the map, you’ll see two options: “Search Nearby” and “Near area on your map.”
The first option works like it always has, searching near your physical location. But the second option? That’s where the magic happens.

If you select “Near area on your map,” Maps will search the area you’re currently viewing, not where you’re standing.
It gets even better. If you’ve already typed in a search and decide to pan to a different part of the map, a new “Search Here” button will appear.

Tap it, and Maps will instantly refresh the results based on the new area you’re viewing.
This may seem like a small change, but it’s huge for trip planning, exploring new neighborhoods, or even finding a late-night bite when you’re out of town.
It makes Apple Maps feel more intuitive as if it finally understands what you want it to do.
So, if you’ve ever been frustrated by Apple Maps’ search quirks, give it another shot with iOS 18.
You might be surprised at how much easier it is to uncover hidden gems nearby or halfway across the world.
