Apple Finally Lets You Move Digital Purchases From One Apple Account to Another—And It’s Already Making Users Furious

If you’ve ever been stuck juggling two Apple IDs—one for iCloud, another for App Store purchases—you know the frustration.

For years, Apple has refused to let users fully merge accounts, forcing many to switch between logins just to access their own content.

Now, Apple is offering a partial fix: You can finally migrate purchased apps, music, and other media from one Apple ID to another. But before you get too excited, there are a few major caveats.

How It Works

Apple’s new migration tool lets you move purchased content from a secondary Apple ID to your primary one, helping consolidate years of scattered downloads.

But (and it’s a big but), there are strict rules:

  • Both accounts must be signed in on the same iPhone or iPad.
  • The secondary account must not be in a different Family Sharing group.
  • You must disable Purchase Sharing before starting.
  • Both accounts must have two-factor authentication enabled and be set to the same region.
  • The secondary account can’t have any balance, rentals, or pre-orders.
  • You need to wait 15 days after your last purchase before transferring.

Once you migrate, the secondary account can no longer be used for purchases.

How to Migrate Purchases Between Apple IDs

If you’re ready to consolidate your Apple IDs, Apple provides a built-in migration tool—but you’ll need to follow a few steps carefully.

Before you begin, review Apple’s checklist to ensure your accounts meet all the requirements.

Also, read Apple’s guidance on what happens during an account migration and how to undo it if needed.

Once you’ve confirmed your eligibility, follow these steps to transfer purchases:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap your name, then select Media & Purchases.
  3. Tap View Account and sign in if prompted.
  4. Select Migrate Purchases and review the information.
  5. Follow the on-screen steps to complete the migration.
  6. Once finished, you’ll see a confirmation message: “Purchases Have Been Migrated.”
  7. Sign out of the secondary Apple ID in Media & Purchases and sign in with your primary account.

Keep in mind that once the migration is complete, the secondary account can no longer be used for media and purchases.

If you change your mind, Apple does allow you to undo the migration, but you won’t be able to migrate purchases again for a full year.

So, What’s the Problem?

This is not a true account merge. You still can’t transfer iCloud data, personalized recommendations in the App Store, Apple TV app, Apple Books, and Apple Podcasts

If you’ve been hoping for a one-click solution that fully combines everything under a single Apple ID, this isn’t it.

For many, this update is a welcome step forward—especially for those who’ve accumulated years of purchases on a separate account. However, the wait continues for users looking for a true Apple ID unification.

Bottom Line

Apple’s purchase migration tool is helpful but far from the seamless fix users have been asking for.

If you’ve been stuck managing multiple Apple IDs, this might ease some of the headaches—but it won’t eliminate it.
