I have over 1,100 notes in Apple Notes, and I’ve been using it for years. Everything from shopping lists to half-baked business ideas lives there.
But even as a longtime fan, I’ll admit something: I almost jumped ship to Notion. That is, until I started using this small but brilliant feature buried in the Notes app.
I’m talking about note links—Apple’s subtle yet shockingly powerful answer to Notion’s internal page linking.
It sounds simple: just type >> in a note, and you’ll get a smart dropdown of recent notes to link to. You can also start typing a note’s title and quickly connect it. Once linked, you can tap to jump instantly between notes—no folders, no digging.

It’s the kind of functionality that feels so natural, it’s a wonder Apple didn’t shout about it. But that’s what makes it feel so Apple: it just works, quietly and beautifully.
Since discovering this feature, I’ve completely changed how I organize everything. Instead of stuffing notes into endless folders, I’ve started building out table-of-contents-style hubs that link to related notes.
I have a travel planning note that links to packing lists, itineraries, and confirmation emails. I’ve even started experimenting with a lightweight “second brain” setup—something I used to rely on Notion for.
Over time, I’ve tried different ways to organize the chaos—folders, subfolders, and even Apple’s built-in tagging system.
Tags help surface related content, especially when searching across categories, but they always felt a bit passive to me.
Linking notes, however, adds a whole new layer of structure. Instead of just grouping ideas, I’m now connecting them—turning scattered thoughts into a living network that’s easy to navigate.
The best part is it’s all happening inside the Apple ecosystem, synced instantly across iPhone, iPad, and Mac, with no subscriptions or third-party accounts needed.
Note links have quietly transformed what used to be a simple app into something much more powerful. It’s not flashy, and it’s not filled with templates or widgets.
But if you’re already living in Apple’s ecosystem, it might be the smartest upgrade to your digital life that you haven’t tried yet.
So if you haven’t explored this feature yet, give it a shot. You might be surprised by how much more useful and organized your Notes app suddenly becomes.
