I’ve always been a stickler for keeping things organized, especially when it comes to my digital life.
The Notes app on my iPhone has been my go-to for jotting down everything from work tasks to grocery lists.
But let’s be honest—over time, my Notes app became a bit of a chaotic mess.
So, when I discovered the new collapsible sections feature in iOS 18, it felt like Apple had peeked into my life and decided to throw me a bone.
So, what exactly are collapsible sections, and why should you care?
Well, if you’ve ever scrolled endlessly through a long note trying to find that one piece of information, this feature is about to make your life a lot easier.
How to Organize Apple Notes With Collapsible Sections
Instead of organizing whole notes with tags, which can only take you so far, collapsible sections let you organize the content within individual notes.
It’s like Marie Kondo for your Notes app—only instead of decluttering your closet, you’re decluttering your thoughts.
Getting started with collapsible sections is as straightforward as it gets.
Open the Notes app, tap to create a new note, and give it a title—something like “Weekly Schedule” works great. Then, use the toolbar to add headings or subheadings.

For example, you might use “Monday” as a heading and “Meditation” as a subheading.

Once you’ve added your content, tap the space in front of your headings, and a little down arrow will appear.
Tap that, and voilà—everything beneath the heading collapses into a neat little bundle.

The Bottom Line
One thing to keep in mind: headings won’t collapse into each other, and neither will subheadings into titles.
But a subheading will collapse under a heading, and everything will collapse under a title if you have more than one. It’s a bit like nesting dolls but for your notes.
I’ve been using this feature to manage my workweek. It’s great for quickly glancing at what I have going on without getting lost in a sea of text.
And if I need to double-check what was discussed in a meeting earlier in the week, I can do so without sifting through pages of notes.
If you’re as obsessed with organization as I am, you’ll definitely want to try this feature.
