Apple’s new Apple TV 4K costs $299, making it considerably more expensive than the 2022 model.

But unless you’re planning to build a HomePod surround sound system or want to control your TV without touching the remote, there’s little reason to rush out and upgrade.

The fourth-generation model brings Apple’s A19 chip, faster wireless connectivity, and hands-free Siri. It also supports a four-speaker HomePod setup that previous Apple TV models can’t handle.

For most people, though, the actual movie-watching experience will feel familiar.

Apple TV 4K (2026) vs. Apple TV 4K (2022): What’s different?

Here’s how the two generations compare.

The new hardware delivers a substantial performance increase on paper, particularly for games and demanding apps.

But both generations support the same maximum video resolution and HDR formats, so upgrading won’t automatically make your favorite movies look better.

There’s also an important pricing distinction. Although the 2022 model originally started at $129, Apple subsequently raised its price.

Compared with the final $249 price of the equivalent 128GB configuration, the new model costs $50 more.

Two upgrades that could actually change how you use Apple TV

1. Four HomePods for surround sound

The fourth-generation Apple TV 4K supports a surround sound setup using four compatible HomePod speakers.

You can place two matching speakers at the front and another matching pair behind your seating area. For example, two second-generation HomePods could handle the front channels while two HomePod mini 2 speakers serve as the rear pair.

The original HomePod and first-generation HomePod mini aren’t supported in this configuration.

It’s a meaningful addition for people who already own compatible HomePods, although buying four speakers specifically for this setup makes the total cost considerably higher than $299.

2. Hands-free Siri without the remote

Three far-field microphones built into the new Apple TV let you activate Siri by voice without pressing a button on the remote.

That’s convenient when you’re sitting on the couch and want to search for something or control playback without finding the remote first.

However, placement matters. If your Apple TV is hidden inside a cabinet, the microphones may be less useful than they would be with the device sitting out in the open.

Also: Apple finally fixed the most annoying thing about losing your TV remote, but your perfectly good iPhone might still ruin it

You don’t need the new Apple TV to get Siri AI

One of the biggest reasons to keep your existing Apple TV is that Apple’s updated Siri isn’t exclusive to the fourth-generation hardware.

The conversational assistant is coming in beta with tvOS 27.2 to second-generation and newer Apple TV 4K models.

That means 2022 model owners will still get Siri’s improved search and follow-up questions without spending $299 on another streaming box.

There’s also a cheaper option for anyone who regularly loses their remote.

The new Siri Remote includes a built-in speaker and Precision Finding, which lets compatible iPhones help locate it. It costs $59 separately and works with older Apple TV 4K models.

Precision Finding requires an iPhone 17 or newer, excluding the iPhone 17e, or an iPhone Air or iPhone Duo.

Should you upgrade to the 2026 Apple TV 4K?

If you own the 2022 Apple TV 4K, keep it unless you specifically want hands-free Siri or four-HomePod surround sound.

The faster chip and connectivity upgrades alone aren’t compelling reasons to spend $299 if you mainly watch streaming services.

If you’re buying your first Apple TV, the fourth-generation model gives you the latest hardware and the most flexibility for future home theater setups. Still, a discounted 2022 model could be a better value if you don’t need the exclusive audio features.

If you have several compatible HomePods, the new model becomes much more interesting. Four-speaker surround support is the clearest reason to upgrade, particularly if you already own the speakers.

The fourth-generation Apple TV 4K is available for preorder now at $299, with deliveries beginning November 13.
