Apple is planning a complete physical redesign of the Apple Watch for 2027, and the change could make every band you currently own incompatible with the new model.
The Apple Watch Series 13 will reportedly feature a redesigned band attachment mechanism, marking the first major departure from the system Apple has used since the original smartwatch debuted in 2015.
The practical implication is direct: anyone who has built up a collection of Apple Watch bands over the years may need to start over if they upgrade to the 2027 model.
According to the report, the redesigned attachment mechanism is not purely aesthetic. Removing the current lug system would free up internal space, allowing Apple to fit a larger battery inside the case.
Apple Watch battery life has been a consistent limitation since launch, with most models requiring nightly charging, so a structural change that creates room for a bigger cell would address one of the product’s most common criticisms.
Buyers planning to upgrade to the 2027 Apple Watch may want to hold off on purchasing additional bands in the meantime, as current accessories likely will not fit the redesigned case.
A separate report last year described a future high-end Apple Watch with eight health sensors arranged in a ring pattern on the underside of the device, tied to expanded health-monitoring capabilities that Apple has been developing for several years.
Apple is also evaluating next-generation OLED display technology for the 2027 watch that could improve power efficiency.
This year’s Apple Watch Series 12, expected this fall, is not anticipated to bring any design changes. It will continue using the same case introduced with the Series 10, which brought a thinner profile, a larger display, and a metal back that integrated the antenna into the housing.
Would you upgrade if it meant replacing every Apple Watch band you already own, or would that be a dealbreaker?
