Apple’s iOS 18.4 is bringing a change iPhone users have been asking for—at least in the EU. For the first time, users there can set a third-party navigation app, like Google Maps or Waze, as default.
That means tapping an address will open in your app of choice instead of Apple Maps. Small change, big impact.
This move comes in response to the EU’s Digital Markets Act, which is pushing Apple to allow more flexibility.
But it’s not just about regulations—this is about user choice. Apple’s ecosystem is known for its seamless experience, and giving users more control only makes it better.
If you’re outside the EU, there’s still a win. iOS 18.4 lets users worldwide set a default translation app.
Do you prefer Google Translate over Apple Translate? Now, you can make the switch. It’s not as big as the navigation change, but it shows Apple is open to adjustments.
The big question is: Will this expand beyond the EU? Apple hasn’t confirmed anything, but history suggests it could happen.
When Apple started allowing third-party browsers as default, it began in specific regions before going global. So, there’s hope.
Right now, iOS 18.4 is in beta, with a full release expected in early April. While it’s not the full default app freedom some users want, it’s a step in that direction. Apple is evolving, and that’s always a good thing for iPhone fans.
I have IOS 18.4.1 installed on a past trip, the audio directions no longer worked. I’ve trying everything and can not get it to work. This is on iPhone 15 Model # mtly3ll/a.
It was working on the trip and then it just stopped. Nothing was changed by me on the phone or on my dashboard display. Just stopped working!!
Thank you for replying and hopefully you have an option that will work.
Thank you very much!
