Apple has released iOS 26.6.2, a targeted fix for a bug that prevented iPhones from downloading software updates over a cellular connection. The update is available now for iPhone 11 and later models.
To install it, open Settings, tap General, then Software Update. Apple notes the update may take a few minutes to appear for all users. iPadOS 26.6.2 is rolling out simultaneously with the same fix.
What the bug affected
The cellular download bug meant users who relied on LTE or 5G to grab updates rather than waiting for a Wi-Fi connection would find the process stalling or failing entirely.
For people who rarely connect to Wi-Fi outside the home, or who travel frequently, the issue was a meaningful obstacle to staying current on software.
iOS 26.6.2 arrives roughly three weeks after iOS 26.6.1, which focused on security patches. That earlier update addressed nearly 30 vulnerabilities across iOS and iPadOS, making it one of the heavier security releases in recent memory.
Timing ahead of iOS 27
The fix lands at a pointed moment. Apple is holding an event on Wednesday where it is widely expected to announce a release date for iOS 27, and the cellular download bug would have complicated the rollout for anyone not on Wi-Fi.
Fixing the issue before the major OS launch could help avoid problems for users who download the update over cellular.
iOS 27 has been in developer beta for months and is expected to ship this fall alongside new iPhone hardware. The Wednesday event is also expected to introduce the iPhone 18 Pro and a new iPhone Ultra model.
For users who plan to stay on iOS 26 rather than upgrade to iOS 27 immediately, the 26.6.2 update remains relevant.
Apple typically continues maintaining the previous major version for some time after a new one ships, and the cellular fix applies to that audience as much as to anyone preparing to download iOS 27 the moment it becomes available.
Brilliant useful information, targets everything. !!!!
