Your 2019 iPhone just got a longer lease on life, and that detail is worth sitting with for a moment.
Apple confirmed at WWDC 2026 that iOS 27 will run on the iPhone 11, a phone that launched when AirPods were still a novelty and foldable phones were a sci-fi punchline. Seven years old, and still on the invite list.
Think about what seven years means in smartphone terms. Android flagships from that era are paperweights now, abandoned by their manufacturers two or three software generations ago.
Apple is continuing support for the iPhone 11 in iOS 27. The decision extends the life of one of the company’s most widely used smartphones and gives many customers another reason to hold off on upgrading.
The supported lineup covers everything from the iPhone SE (3rd generation) through the brand-new iPhone 17 series, including the iPhone Air.
iPhone 12 users, iPhone 13 mini holdouts, anyone sitting on a 14 Pro from a few years back, all of them will see iOS 27 arrive on their devices when it drops in September.
Apple is also pushing broader Apple Intelligence upgrades with this release, smarter AI woven into apps across iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
Not every phone on that compatibility list will get every feature. The iPhone 11 will run iOS 27, but some of the more demanding AI capabilities will almost certainly be reserved for newer chips.
So the real question is how much of the good stuff actually lands on it once it does. Still, Apple keeping the iPhone 11 in the fold sends a signal.
A company chasing upgrade revenue does not support six-year-old hardware out of generosity. It does so because a large portion of its installed base is still running older devices, and cutting them off too early costs goodwill faster than it can sell new phones.
If you have been on the fence about whether to hold onto your current phone another year, Apple just made that decision considerably easier for a lot of people.
