Apple is expanding CarPlay in iOS 27 with support for AirPlay video playback, allowing users to stream content from their iPhone directly to a compatible vehicle display while parked.
The feature was detailed during WWDC 2026 and works through AirPlay. Users can open a supported video app on their iPhone, select AirPlay, and send content to their car’s infotainment screen.
Playback is restricted to parked vehicles. Apple highlighted scenarios such as waiting in a pickup area or charging an electric vehicle, where drivers may want to watch content while remaining in their car.
The update also allows developers to build video browsing capabilities directly into CarPlay apps, reducing the need to switch between the vehicle display and an iPhone.
Apple is bringing Siri AI to CarPlay as well. The upgraded assistant can access personal context across apps, allowing users to perform more complex requests while driving.
During its WWDC presentation, Apple demonstrated Siri retrieving information from Messages in response to a voice query.
Several smaller updates are also coming to CarPlay in iOS 27. Apple says the release improves GPS accuracy and heading information, adds audio scrubbing controls to the Now Playing interface, introduces a mini audio player for multitasking, and improves wireless CarPlay reliability.
The new features will roll out as part of iOS 27, which is currently available in developer beta and is scheduled for a public release later this year.
Vehicle compatibility will depend on support from automakers. Apple has not yet published a list of vehicles that support AirPlay video in CarPlay, so availability may vary by manufacturer and model year.
To get your hands on these new CarPlay features, you’ll need an iPhone running iOS 27. The developer beta is already available, with a public beta following in July.
If you’d rather wait for the polished, official release, expect it to hit all compatible iPhones this September.
