The first developer beta of iOS 27 is officially out, but access to its headline AI features is being gated.

Instead of immediate availability, Apple has implemented a waitlist system directly inside the Settings app to manage user rollout.

Developers looking to test the new capabilities will have to join the queue and wait for server-side activation.

Apple did something similar when Apple Intelligence first rolled out in iOS 18, so there is precedent. The company throttles access on purpose, likely to keep its private cloud compute infrastructure from buckling under a sudden flood of requests.

Some developers who grabbed the beta early got through it within hours, so the wait probably isn’t brutal for everyone.

The version of Siri shipping with iOS 27 is a meaningful step beyond what came before. Apple positioned it as a direct competitor to ChatGPT and Google Gemini, which is a pretty bold thing to put in a WWDC keynote.

If you are in the European Union and using an iPhone or iPad, Siri AI is not available to you at all. Mac users in the EU can try it, which is a strange carveout that almost certainly reflects ongoing regulatory friction with Brussels. China is a complete exclusion with no workaround mentioned. English is the only supported language for now.

Siri AI itself is free, but Apple caps certain features like image generation on a daily basis. If you want higher limits, an iCloud Plus subscription bumps those caps up.

It is a quiet but effective way to nudge people toward paid iCloud tiers without outright charging for the AI itself.

Hardware compatibility lands on any device already cleared for Apple Intelligence, covering iPhone 15 Pro and newer.

The most powerful on-device capabilities, though, need an iPhone 17 Pro or Air, an M4 iPad with at least 12GB of memory, or an M3 Mac with the same memory threshold. So your iPhone 16 Pro gets plenty of features but sits out of the top tier.

If you are a developer running the iOS 27 beta, go to Settings, find the Siri section, and look for the option to join the waitlist. Once you are in, the new features should activate without needing to do anything else.
