Apple’s Biggest Siri Upgrade in Years Comes With a Twist That Could Make Privacy-Focused iPhone Users Uneasy

Apple and Google quietly cut a deal that puts Google’s Gemini AI at the core of the new Siri. So when you talk to Siri on iOS 27, you’re partly talking to Google.

For a company that has spent years positioning itself as the privacy-first alternative to Google, that’s a genuinely strange place to land.

Newly surfaced renders show that iOS 27 will let you swipe down from the top center of your iPhone screen, from anywhere, to pull up a feature called “Search or Ask.”

The results appear as a card that floats out of the Dynamic Island. It essentially fuses a traditional search bar and a chatbot into a single gesture.

If you want to dive deeper, another quick swipe drops you straight into a full Siri conversation.

For the first time, Siri is getting its own dedicated app with a dark interface by default, a text field at the bottom, a mic toggle, and a paperclip for attaching files.

Your conversation history sticks around, too, though you can set it to auto-delete. Think of it as Apple’s answer to ChatGPT, woven into your calendar, inbox, and messages. Ask it when you’re free next Tuesday, and it’ll actually check your calendar before answering.

Gemini will power the underlying AI models, but ChatGPT is still in the mix, and a new “Extensions” feature is expected to let you plug in Claude and other chatbots too.

So, depending on what you ask, your words might travel through Apple, Google, OpenAI, or Anthropic’s systems. Whether that feels empowering or overwhelming probably depends on how much you trust any of them.

Apple is set to show everything off at WWDC on June 8, with the full release expected in September. Because these features rely on Apple Intelligence, you’ll need an iPhone 15 Pro or newer to get them. Older devices sit this one out entirely.
