The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max each carry 12GB of RAM, the same amount as their predecessors. That makes this the first year in recent memory that Apple’s flagship iPhones have arrived without a memory upgrade.

Apple doesn’t advertise RAM figures for the iPhone, but the 12GB allocation appears in Xcode 27, the company’s developer toolkit.

The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max also shipped with 12GB of RAM, meaning buyers paying more this year are getting the same memory allocation as last year’s models.

Starting prices for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are $1,199 and $1,299 respectively, each $100 higher than where the iPhone 17 Pro lineup began.

A shortage behind the stagnation

Apple is contending with an industrywide RAM chip shortage that has pushed costs higher across its product line.

As a result, the company has raised prices on multiple products in recent months, and iPhone 18 Pro pricing reflects that pressure.

Apple has not addressed publicly whether the shortage also factored into its decision not to increase memory capacity.

For context, the standard iPhone 17 has 8GB of RAM, while the iPhone Air and both iPhone 17 Pro models sit at 12GB.

The newly announced iPhone Duo, Apple’s foldable device, shares the same A20 Pro chip as the iPhone 18 Pro models. Xcode does not yet list the Duo’s RAM directly, but the shared silicon suggests it will also land at 12GB.

What it means for existing Pro owners

For anyone on an iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone 17 Pro Max, the flat RAM count reduces the likelihood that future iOS features or Apple Intelligence capabilities will be gated behind the newer hardware.

Both generations sit at the same memory level, which typically means software updates apply equally across them.

Whether that parity is enough reason to upgrade is a different question. The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are available to pre-order starting Saturday, September 12 at 5 a.m. Pacific Time, with general availability set for Friday, September 18.
