Apple’s first foldable iPhone is finally here, and Apple isn’t treating the second screen as an accessory.
The new iPhone Duo opens from a 5.4-inch phone into a 7.6-inch display, giving users considerably more room without requiring them to unfold it every time they want to answer a message or check a notification.
It goes on sale October 23 starting at $1,999 for 256GB, with preorders beginning October 16.
That 5.4-inch outer display covers about 90% of the iPhone 18 Pro‘s screen, so when closed, the Duo is still meant to function like a regular iPhone.
When open, the display becomes 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max and 80% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro.
Apple also used the foldable design to chase thinness. When open, the Duo is the thinnest iPhone Apple has made, helped by moving much of the internal hardware into the camera plateau rather than spreading it throughout the body.
Apple spent years trying to make the fold disappear
Much of the engineering work went into the part Apple would rather you stop noticing once the phone is open: the hinge and crease.
The hinge contains more than 100 precision components and is designed to hold the two halves flat when fully extended.
Beneath the display, titanium and carbon fiber support layers provide structure while viscoelastic adhesives allow individual layers to move slightly as the phone folds.
Apple took a more unusual approach to the crease itself. A custom nano texture reduces glare around the fold, while a microscopic lens pattern is written across the surface pixel by pixel using laser lithography, making the crease harder to see.
The rest of the hardware follows Apple’s familiar premium iPhone formula. The frame is titanium, Ceramic Shield protects both sides, and the phone carries an IP68 rating. Touch ID replaces Face ID in the side button, although Apple Watch can also unlock the device.
Apple Pencil support is coming to both displays later this year.
Opening the Duo changes how iOS works
The bigger challenge was making 7.6 inches of screen useful rather than simply stretching the iPhone interface across it.
Apple has reworked parts of iOS specifically for the Duo. Controls move toward the edges where they’re easier to reach, the dock turns vertical, and the status bar shifts into a corner.
Open the phone and whatever was on the outer screen expands onto the larger display without moving important controls to unfamiliar places.
iOS also knows when the Duo isn’t completely flat. Partially fold it, and interactive elements can move away from the crease, where tapping becomes less comfortable.
The extra room also introduces something conventional iPhones can’t do: run two apps side by side.
The Duo can even open two instances of the same app, while a new Standby mode fills the inner display with widgets for music, calendars and weather when the phone is sitting on a bedside table.
The fold also changes how you use the cameras
Apple skipped a dedicated telephoto camera, instead pairing a 48MP Fusion main camera with the same 48MP ultra-wide found on the iPhone 18 Pro.
But having screens and cameras on both sides creates a few tricks of its own.
The outer display has a 12MP Center Stage camera, while another FaceTime camera sits beneath the inner display.
The Duo can record from the front and rear cameras at the same time, and Duo FaceTime can put another person on the outer screen while a call continues on the inside.
Smart Take goes one step further by automatically taking a group photo once everyone is in position, removing the need for someone to reach for the shutter.
Two halves also means two batteries
Instead of squeezing one unusually shaped battery around the hinge, Apple put a battery in each half of the Duo.
Combined, they’re rated for up to 24 hours when the two displays are used equally. Video playback stretches to 31 hours on the inner screen or 44 hours if you stick to the smaller outer display.
The new C2 modem improves efficiency while bringing another important change: 5G mmWave support in the U.S. Apple says it’s up to 50% faster than the C1X while consuming up to 15% less power.
Performance also gets a sizable bump, with Apple claiming up to 35% higher sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro.
Charging to 50% takes about 20 minutes, while a five-minute charge can provide up to five hours of video playback on the outer screen.
The iPhone Duo will be available in Star White and Night Sky and is eSIM-only worldwide.
