You Already Paid for an Apple Pencil, but Apple’s $1,999 Foldable iPhone Might Force You to Buy Another One Just to Use It

Apple’s iPhone Duo will get Apple Pencil support with iOS 27.2 next week, letting owners use a stylus on both displays of the company’s first foldable iPhone.

The feature was confirmed through testing with the iOS 27.2 Release Candidate, which enables the USB-C Apple Pencil to work on the Duo’s 5.4-inch outer display and larger 7.6-inch inner screen.

You will be able to draw, annotate documents, and scroll through compatible apps using the stylus. However, only the USB-C Apple Pencil has been confirmed to work with the device so far.

A Bigger Screen Makes Apple Pencil More Useful

With its 7.6-inch inner display, the iPhone Duo offers considerably more room for handwriting and drawing than a traditional iPhone.

Adding Apple Pencil support brings some of the functionality typically associated with an iPad to a device that can still fold into a pocket.

If you already own a USB-C Apple Pencil, the accessory should work with the Duo without requiring another purchase.

However, the foldable screen introduces a potential concern. Unlike the glass displays found on iPads, the Duo’s inner screen uses a flexible plastic-based surface that could be more vulnerable to scratches.

Some users have questioned whether repeated contact with the Apple Pencil’s hard tip could damage the display over time. But no confirmed evidence of such damage from normal use exists.

Apple Is Still Dealing With Launch Shortages

The Apple Pencil confirmation comes after iPhone Duo pre-orders opened on October 16, with demand quickly exceeding available inventory ahead of its October 23 retail launch.

Recent reports about the foldable’s limited availability indicate that Apple retail employees have been advised to discourage customers without pre-orders from visiting stores on launch day.

Apple has also reportedly increased iPhone Duo production orders by 44%, suggesting it expects demand to remain strong beyond the initial launch.

Early reviews have highlighted several compromises, including Touch ID replacing Face ID and disappointing image quality from the under-display FaceTime camera.

Some reviewers also encountered stability issues when using the unfolded device with MagSafe charging stands.

Apple Pencil support won’t be available when the Duo first reaches customers. Instead, owners will need to install iOS 27.2, expected next week, before they can use the stylus on either screen.
