Paying $1,999 for the iPhone Duo Still Means Giving Up Some of the Best Features Apple Puts in Its Much Cheaper Pro Models

Apple’s $1,999 iPhone Duo may be the most expensive iPhone in the lineup, but paying more doesn’t get you everything Apple puts in its Pro models.

The company’s first foldable gives up several features found on the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, with some of the biggest compromises coming from the cameras.

The Duo has no dedicated telephoto lens, limiting optical zoom to 2x through its 48-megapixel Fusion camera. The iPhone 18 Pro models can reach 8x optical zoom.

It also misses out on variable aperture, which gives photographers more control over how much of a scene remains in focus.

The camera tradeoffs go further

The Duo’s front camera is 12 megapixels, compared with 18 megapixels on the Pro models. There’s also no LiDAR Scanner for depth sensing and augmented reality.

Several of Apple’s Pro camera features are missing as well, including ProRAW, ProRes RAW, Pro camera controls, and spatial photo and video capture.

Those omissions make the Duo a less capable camera than the iPhone 18 Pro despite its much higher starting price.

There are hardware differences beyond photography. Apple uses Touch ID in the Duo’s side button instead of Face ID, and the foldable doesn’t have the Action button found on the Pro models.

Some of those compromises likely come down to space. Fitting a telephoto camera, LiDAR Scanner and other components inside a device that has to remain thin enough to fold leaves Apple with different constraints than it faces with a conventional iPhone.

What the Duo gets instead

Apple is betting that the foldable screen makes those tradeoffs worthwhile.

The Duo opens from a 5.4-inch outer screen into a 7.6-inch display and gets features built specifically around that design, including Duo FaceTime and support for Apple Pencil coming in a future update.

So the choice isn’t simply between a more expensive and less expensive iPhone. The Pro models offer Apple’s better camera system and familiar features such as Face ID, while the Duo trades some of those capabilities for a screen no other iPhone can offer.

Buyers will also have longer to make that decision. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max go on sale September 18. Duo preorders don’t begin until October 16, with the foldable arriving October 23.
