Apple’s iPhone Duo carries a full IP68 dust and water resistance rating, giving Apple’s first foldable the same level of protection found on its conventional flagship iPhones.

The rating is particularly important for a foldable phone, where the hinge creates another potential entry point for dust and debris that can damage moving components over time.

What the IP68 Rating Actually Covers

The first number in an IP rating measures protection against solid particles. An IP6X classification means the iPhone Duo is completely dust-tight, with no dust able to penetrate the enclosure during standardized testing.

That’s an advantage over Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8, which carries an IP48 rating and isn’t fully sealed against smaller dust particles.

Google’s Pixel 11 Pro Fold, however, also carries an IP68 rating, matching Apple’s level of dust and water protection.

On the water side, Apple rates the iPhone Duo for submersion at a maximum depth of six meters for up to 30 minutes, consistent with recent standard iPhones.

The protection applies whether the device is folded or fully open.

Apple includes its usual caveat that water and dust resistance “are not permanent conditions” and can diminish through normal wear over time.

Built to Handle Daily Wear

Apple has reinforced the iPhone Duo in other areas that could matter for long-term durability.

The device uses a titanium frame and titanium hinge cover, materials chosen for strength and corrosion resistance around one of the most mechanically demanding parts of a foldable phone.

The folding inner display uses a 10-layer construction designed to maintain structural integrity through repeated folding cycles.

Together, the sealed hinge, titanium construction, and IP68 rating address some of the durability concerns that have followed foldable phones since the category emerged.

The iPhone Duo is scheduled to launch on Friday, October 23, 2026, with preorders opening a week earlier on Friday, October 16, at 5:00 a.m. PT.
