If you’re paying for iCloud+ and not using Private Relay, you’re missing out on one of Apple’s best-kept privacy secrets.
I’m not exaggerating—this feature is like a built-in VPN designed by Apple, and it quietly does a lot more than most people realize.
Private Relay hides your IP address and encrypts your Safari browsing traffic in a way that even Apple can’t track. That means no more websites building profiles on you based on your location or behavior.

It’s a two-hop system: one server encrypts your traffic, and a second assigns you a temporary IP address. No single party ever knows both who you are and where you’re going online. Pretty clever, right?
Unlike many VPNs, Private Relay doesn’t slow down your phone. It’s seamless, always-on (once enabled), and fully integrated into iOS and iPadOS. You won’t even notice it running, but you’ll definitely notice the peace of mind it brings.
Private Relay especially shines when you’re on public Wi-Fi. Coffee shop networks? Hotel internet? Those are playgrounds for snoops.

With Private Relay turned on, you’re shielded from most of those risks automatically. You don’t need to download an extra app or use sketchy third-party software. It’s just pure Apple simplicity.
Of course, there are limits. It only works in Safari, not in other browsers or apps. Some sites may ask for additional verification if they cannot pinpoint your IP. But for most users, the tradeoff is totally worth it.

To turn the Private Relay feature on your iPhone, follow these steps:
- Go to Settings.
- Tap [your name].
- Select iCloud.
- Then, tap Private Relay and toggle the switch.
That’s it. If you’re already paying for iCloud+ like I do (even the $0.99/month tier), it’s included.
Apple’s Private Relay is a rare case of “set it and forget it” protection. If you haven’t enabled it yet, now’s the time.
