This 50-Year-Old Rising Star Could Be Apple’s Last Chance to Bring the iPhone Back to the Steve Jobs Glory Era

We’ve spent the last decade talking about Apple as the world’s most efficient logistics machine. Tim Cook is a supply chain genius, and he turned the company into a trillion-dollar fortress by mastering the art of the inventory spreadsheet.

But if you’re like me and you grew up on the high-drama product reveals of the early 2000s, there is a part of you that misses when the person at the top seemed obsessed with the actual screws, the glass, and the silicon.

That is why the news that John Ternus is taking over the design teams is such a significant signal to the hardcore enthusiast community.

He is basically being groomed as the heir apparent, according to a report. For the first time in a long time, we are looking at a potential CEO who is a hardware engineer to his core.

Ternus has been the face of the Mac’s massive comeback. He was there for the transition to Apple Silicon, which is arguably the most successful hardware pivot in the history of computing.

Take a look at the current MacBook Pro or the iMac, and you’ll see his fingerprints everywhere. He is the one who steered Apple away from that “form over function” phase, where we were stuck with things like the butterfly keyboard.

Because of his shift in focus, we entered an era in which ports made a comeback and thermal performance became a priority once more.

However, being the product guy in 2026 is a lot more complicated than it was in 2006. If Ternus actually takes the big chair, his engineering background will be tested immediately by the realities of global regulation.

Also: Apple let ChatGPT take the lead, then moved the ai battle somewhere it could actually win

We are living in a world where the European Union is basically designing the iPhone’s charging port and sideloading policies for them. The Department of Justice is looking at the blue bubbles in iMessage with a magnifying glass.

The real challenge for Ternus goes way beyond nailing the industrial design of a foldable phone. He’s stepping into a “Post-App Store” minefield where governments are actively prying open Apple’s ecosystem.

It remains to be seen if a hardware-focused leader has the political chops to navigate that kind of regulatory chaos.

Tim Cook won by being a master of the supply chain during a period of relative peace. Ternus will have to win by defending the integrated experience of Apple hardware while the courts knock down the walls of the garden.

By putting the design teams under Ternus now, Cook is signaling that the era of “operations first” might be coming to an end.

For a while, design was reporting to Jeff Williams, who is a brilliant operations guy but not a product creator. Now, the people dreaming up the next iPhone or the next wearable are reporting to a guy who knows exactly how to build a logic board.

At 50, Ternus brings a much younger energy to the leadership team. He carries himself with the quiet confidence of a seasoned lead guitarist who stays cool while the stage is on fire. He is a builder at heart, someone who values the craft of the product over the flair of the spotlight.

For those of us who want Apple to keep taking big, nerdy swings on hardware, this move is the best news in years. It feels like the product person is finally moving back to the center of the office.
