The iPhone is designed to simplify many aspects of our lives, offering features that enhance productivity, security, and convenience.
From managing schedules to ensuring our data is protected, the iPhone is a versatile tool that adapts to our needs.
One particularly useful feature is Live Listen, which turns your iPhone into a remote microphone that sends sound to your AirPods or Beats.
For instance, you can use it to hear conversations in a noisy room, assist someone with hearing difficulties, or even pick up sounds from another room.
Here’s how to use the Live Listen feature with your AirPods or Beats.
Note: This feature is exclusive to Apple, so Live Listen is only compatible with AirPods and Beats headphones.
How to Use Live Listen with AirPods on Your iPhone
To use the Live Listen feature, ensure you have an iPhone running iOS 14.3 or a later version.
First, navigate to Settings > General > Software Update. If an update is available, download and install it. Then, follow these steps.
1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
2. Go to Control Center, scroll down, and tap the green plus icon next to “Hearing” to add it to your Control Center.

3. Connect your AirPods to your iPhone.
4. Open the Control Center by swiping down from the top-right corner of the screen and tap the Hearing icon.

5. Tap the Live Listen icon to turn it on.
And there you have it. Live Listen is now active, and you’ll see a decibel meter indicating the volume of the sound coming through your AirPods.

You can hear everything clearly as long as you are within a connected range of up to 50 feet from your phone and no walls obstruct the signal.
You can adjust the volume through the volume buttons on your iPhone or move your iPhone closer or further from the sound source to adjust clarity.
How can you tell if someone is using this feature on their iPhone? It’s easy to check. Look for an orange dot in the upper right corner of the screen, indicating that an app is actively using the microphone.
If the phone’s owner has enabled control access while the phone is locked, swipe down from the top right corner of the screen to see which app is using the microphone.
If you see “Live Listen,” the person is intentionally eavesdropping on your conversations.
