macOS 27 Golden Gate changes how ChatGPT works with Siri, and you’ll have to be more deliberate about using it.
In macOS Tahoe, Siri could suggest sending a question to ChatGPT when it determined that OpenAI’s chatbot might provide a better answer. Golden Gate no longer proactively offers that handoff.
ChatGPT remains available as a Siri extension, but you have to explicitly choose it when you want to use it. There’s also no option to make ChatGPT the default, so new queries go to Siri unless you specify otherwise.
How to use ChatGPT instead of Siri
First, make sure the ChatGPT extension is enabled under System Settings > Siri > ChatGPT > Use Extension.
Apple lets you use the integration with or without signing in to a ChatGPT account. Signing in gives you access to your account and allows conversations to appear in your ChatGPT history.
Once the extension is enabled, press Command-Space to open the Search or Ask bar.
Right-click or Control-click the field, select Ask, and then choose Use ChatGPT before entering your question.
The selection isn’t permanent. After ChatGPT responds, the Search or Ask bar switches back to Siri, so you’ll need to choose ChatGPT again for another query.
Voice is quicker. Start a Siri request with “Ask ChatGPT” and the question will be sent directly to ChatGPT. You can use the same phrase when typing a request.
ChatGPT could eventually have company
ChatGPT is currently the only third-party AI service available from the Ask menu, but code inside macOS 27 shows that Apple has built support for additional models.
The underlying Model Delegation system can accommodate Anthropic’s Claude as another selectable extension alongside ChatGPT.
Claude isn’t available through Siri yet, and Apple hasn’t announced when or if it will enable the integration.
For now, Golden Gate gives Siri the first shot at every query unless you specifically ask for ChatGPT.
