Apple isn’t overhauling the Phone app in iOS 26, but it is addressing one of its most overlooked shortcomings: the lack of a native way to follow up on missed calls.
For years, we had only two options when we ignored or declined a call: call back immediately or try to remember to do so later.
That gap is finally being addressed in iOS 26, which introduces a new feature that allows you to create call reminders directly from the Recents list.
The option appears when swiping left on a missed call and offers a few default time presets in an hour, later at night, tomorrow, along with a custom scheduling tool.

Once set, the reminder appears not just in the Phone app’s updated layout, but also syncs to the system-wide Reminders app. Each reminder includes a one-tap option to return the call, and can be deleted from either location.

The feature is available in both Classic and Unified views. However, the new Unified layout gives reminders more prominence, separating them into a dedicated section at the top of the Recents tab.
This marks a rare but welcome refinement of a core iPhone function. The Phone app has seen relatively little attention in recent iOS releases, aside from visual polish and last year’s live voicemail transcription.
With this update, Apple is quietly making the app more actionable and arguably smarter without relying on AI or Siri.
The timing also makes sense. As Apple pushes iOS 26 as a more intelligent operating system, changes like this help reinforce that message in everyday use cases.
The missed call reminder feature is now available in the iOS 26 public beta and will be rolled out to all users in the fall.
