Gotechtor's Editorial Guidelines

Modern gaming systems, including the PS5, rely on the ability to navigate games with a game controller.

That means that the controller is an essential accessory without which not much gaming will take place.

So when you find your PS5 controller not charging, it really impedes your gaming plans. There are several reasons why your PS5 controller might not be charging, but luckily, they are relatively easy to troubleshoot.

Let’s review some of the reasons why this problem may occur and some ways to get around it to get you back to your PS5 gaming experience.

1. Try Another USB Port Or Charging Cable

The PS5 DualSense controllers charge by being connected to the PS5’s USB ports. However, if the USB port malfunctions, the controller won’t collect a charge.

The PS5 has three USB-A ports (one in the back and two in the front), so if you suspect the port you are using to charge is the problem, simply try another one. There is also a USB-C port if that is your preferred connection.

2. Check Charging Station

If your DualSense controller uses a charging station, it may be the source of the problem. Try a USB connection on the console to verify it isn’t the station that is not charging.

Alternatively, you can plug the charging station into a different power source (another wall outlet).

You may also find that it does not work if it’s plugged into an extension cord. The issue could also be in the adapter, so if it does not work on any outlet, you will need to acquire a replacement from your retailer.

3. Perform A Controller “Soft-Reset”

A “soft-reset” reboots the firmware of your DualSense controller and could fix the errors that are causing the problems with charging functions. To perform this “soft reset,” you should:

  • Connect the DualSense controller via USB port to your PS5 console.
  • Hold down the PS button in the center of the controller for about 10 seconds or until the light bar is no longer on.
  • Wait a few more seconds, then press the PS button again.

Test to see if the controller is now charging.

4. Re-register Your Controller

Sometimes, you need to re-register your controller to the PS5 to fix charging issues.

You can do this by following these steps:

  • Open the Settings menu.
  • Select the Accessories tab.
  • Choose the General category.
  • Select Bluetooth Accessories.
  • Choose the controller you wish to disconnect from the list.
  • Choose the Delete option, then OK to confirm the deletion.
  • Restart the PS5.

Once it restarts, plug the Dualsense controller up to it with a USB wire and the controller will re-register to the console.

5. Verify Power Saving Settings

If you noticed that the only time your controller won’t charge is while the PS5 is in “rest mode” you can try altering the power saving settings on the console to see if this helps to resolve the issue.

Here’s how to do this:

  • From the Settings menu, go to the System tab.
  • Choose Power Saving.
  • From there, move down to Features Available in Rest Mode.
  • Then, choose 3 Hours next to the Supply Power to USB Ports option.

This will enable all USB ports to power anything plugged into for 3 hours regardless of whether or not the PS5 is in rest mode.

6. Alter Communication Method Settings

Some charging issues can be addressed by updating the method by which your console and controller communicate.

You can change it to a USB charge rather than having the controller respond via Bluetooth.

You can do this by following these steps:

  • Go to the Accessories tab on the PS5’s Settings menu.
  • Choose Controller (General).
  • Communication Method.
  • Change it from Use Bluetooth to Use USB Cable.

7. Update Firmware

DualSense controller updates are released fairly regularly and tend to resolve any identified problems with the controllers, which could include charging.

To check if there are firmware updates available:

  1. Open the Settings menu.
  2. Go to the Accessories tab.
  3. Select the Controller (General) tab.
  4. Then, select DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software.
  5. Ensure your controller is connected to the console, and then select the Update button to start.

While you’re at it, you should also update the PS5’s firmware.

From the PS5 Settings, navigate to the System tab and choose System Software, then System Software Update and Settings.

From here, choose Update System Software and then Update Using Internet. If any updates are available, they will be downloaded and installed now.

Wrap Up

If you have worked your way through this entire troubleshooting guide with the DualSense controller charging problems and it is still giving you trouble, you might have a defective controller.

These defects can range from a damaged circuit board to a bad battery. At this point, the next logical move is to contact PlayStation support.

The Playstation representatives will advise you on assessing the hardware and proceed in an exchange or conduct additional troubleshooting.
