Nowadays, our smartphones have become like trusted partners, always by our side, ready to assist us in countless ways.
They’re not just phones anymore; they’re our alarm clocks, cameras, and even our organizers, seamlessly blending into our everyday routines and replacing a whole bunch of stuff we used to carry around.
And now, Apple is taking this convenience to the next level by letting you add a digital driver’s license to the Wallet app on the iPhone.
No more digging through your wallet for your driver’s license or state ID. Now, with just a tap on your iPhone, you can easily pass through airport security.
Currently, this feature is only available in four States:
- Arizona
- Colorado
- Georgia
- Maryland
Other States like Hawaii, Mississippi, Connecticut, Utah, Oklahoma, Ohio, Kentucky, and Iowa have announced plans to adopt mobile digital licenses. However, there is no clear timeline for when they will officially launch the feature.
Note: Apple Wallet isn’t your only option if you live in Florida or Louisiana and want a digital driver’s license. These states have their own dedicated apps for storing digital IDs.
How to Add Your Driver’s License to Apple Wallet
If you’re a resident of one of the States that currently support the feature, here’s how to add your driver’s license or ID to the Wallet app.
The process is as easy as adding a credit card to your Apple Wallet.
1. Open the Wallet app and tap the “+” button.

2. Choose “Driver’s License or State ID” at the bottom.

3. Next, select your State.

4. Scan your physical license (front and back) and take a selfie using your iPhone’s camera. This information is securely sent to your state for verification.
5. Follow the prompt to confirm your identity.
After your state approves your request, a digital copy of your ID will be stored securely on your iPhone. You can then add this digital ID to your Apple Watch for convenient access when you’re out and about.
Note: To add a digital ID, you’ll need either an iPhone 8 or later (running iOS 15.4 or later) or an Apple Watch Series 4 or later (running WatchOS 8.4 or later).
