Apple Cash users will need to verify their identity to keep sending, receiving, and adding money starting November 9, according to an email Apple is sending to customers.
The change removes the existing $500 threshold that allowed people to use Apple Cash without completing identity verification. After November 9, you’ll need to verify your identity regardless of how much money you add to the account.
Green Dot Bank, which provides Apple Cash accounts and services, says it’s making the change for fraud protection and regulatory reasons.
What happens if you don’t verify your identity
An unverified Apple Cash account won’t become completely unusable on November 9.
You’ll still be able to spend money already sitting in your Apple Cash balance and transfer those funds to a linked bank account. You won’t be able to send money, receive money, or add more money to Apple Cash until verification is complete.

That distinction matters for anyone who keeps a balance in Apple Cash. Your existing money isn’t being frozen, but most features that let money move into or between Apple Cash accounts will stop working.
On iOS 27, users in states that support digital driver’s licenses can verify their identity using an ID already stored in Apple Wallet. That avoids having to photograph and submit a physical driver’s license during the verification process.
Other users will need to complete Green Dot Bank’s standard identity verification process.
Apple Cash could get another way to add money
Apple also disclosed a potential change to how users fund their Apple Cash accounts.
Currently, adding money directly to Apple Cash requires a supported debit or prepaid card stored in Wallet.
Green Dot may eventually allow users to transfer money directly from a bank or merchant into Apple Cash, giving the service another funding option.
Apple has not announced a launch date for that feature, though. Apple Cash remains available only in the United States. Adults 18 and older can open their own accounts, while younger users can access the service through Apple Cash Family.
The new identity verification requirement takes effect November 9. Anyone who still sees an option to Verify Identity in their Apple Cash settings should complete the process before then to avoid losing access to sending, receiving, and reloading money.
