Apple has hired Nick Gatten, a former executive vice president at American Airlines, as its new vice president of government affairs, according to Bloomberg.
The appointment comes as longtime senior vice president Katherine Adams prepares to retire at the end of 2026.
Gatten will report to Jennifer Newstead, Apple’s senior vice president and general counsel, and will absorb a significant portion of Adams’ responsibilities. Adams is expected to remain available in an advisory capacity until October 1.

Bloomberg describes Gatten as a Republican whom Apple believed could navigate the current political environment while maintaining relationships across party lines.
His background includes managing congressional relations at Fannie Mae, overseeing government affairs at JPMorgan Chase, and holding a senior role at American Airlines.
He also sits on the board of the Faith and Politics institution, an organization that, according to its mission, works to cultivate “mutual respect, moral reflection, increased understanding, and honest conversation among political leaders.”
Apple believes Gatten can work effectively with both parties. That bipartisan reach is crucial as Democrats fight for control of Congress in the upcoming midterms, while the Trump administration enters the final stretch of its term.
Timing and Leadership Context
The hire lands during a significant transition at the top of Apple. Tim Cook is scheduled to step down as CEO on September 1, with hardware chief John Ternus set to succeed him.
Cook will remain involved as executive chairman, focusing on engagement with policymakers and governments globally, meaning Gatten’s work will intersect closely with Cook’s continued role.
