Apple is still planning to release its own privacy-focused home security camera in 2027, separate from the smart home devices being developed with LG.
The distinction matters because the two camera systems serve different purposes.
LG’s lineup includes traditional indoor and outdoor security cameras, while Apple’s own device takes an unusual approach to monitoring activity inside the home.
Apple’s camera won’t record video
Apple’s upcoming camera is designed to understand what’s happening inside a home without saving video footage.
Instead, on-device AI will analyze the surrounding environment and identify which room someone is occupying.
That information could help Apple’s smart home system respond to people moving throughout the house without maintaining a library of recordings.
It’s an interesting approach to one of the biggest privacy concerns surrounding indoor security cameras.
A device that can recognize activity without storing footage could appeal to people who want smart home automation but feel uncomfortable placing recording cameras throughout their living spaces.
However, there is a significant tradeoff. Without recorded video, you wouldn’t have footage to review after a break-in or another incident.
That makes Apple’s device better suited to home awareness and automation than conventional video surveillance, at least based on what’s known so far.
LG’s cameras will serve a different purpose
Apple’s partnership with LG covers seven smart home accessories, including a video doorbell, smart lock, thermostat, and several security cameras.
Those products will carry LG branding, with Apple helping develop their features and integration with its smart home ecosystem.
The cameras are intended to provide more traditional home security capabilities, including video recording.
The LG accessories are expected to arrive several months after Apple’s upcoming home hub, which could be announced alongside a new Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini on October 13.
Apple’s own camera remains targeted for 2027, with no confirmed price or specific release date. The company is also developing a related home security service, although details about how it will work remain limited.
