Apple Is Moving Into a Business It’s Never Been In Before, but for Some Reason It Doesn’t Want Its Name on the Products

Apple has quietly partnered with LG Electronics to develop a lineup of smart home devices, including security cameras, a video doorbell, a smart lock, and a thermostat designed to work with its upcoming home hub.

LG will manufacture and sell the products under its brand, with Apple playing an active role in their design, features, and engineering.

Seven smart home devices are in development

Regulatory filings with the FCC and safety certification organization UL Solutions reveal seven products: a wired video doorbell, smart deadbolt lock, thermostat, temperature sensor, indoor camera, outdoor camera, and floodlight camera.

Several devices support Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Thread, and Matter, allowing them to communicate with compatible smart home platforms.

The deadbolt also includes ultra-wideband technology, which could enable automatic unlocking when an authorized device approaches.

The accessories are designed to work with Apple’s upcoming home hub, giving customers more ways to connect and control devices throughout their homes.

Apple is letting LG handle the hardware

Apple has used a similar arrangement with LG before. When Apple wasn’t selling its own external displays, LG produced UltraFine 4K and 5K monitors designed specifically for Mac users.

The smart home partnership extends that relationship into another category, allowing Apple to influence how accessories work within its ecosystem while LG handles manufacturing and sales.

It’s a practical approach for a company expanding into a market where customers often need several cameras, locks, sensors, and other accessories to build a complete setup.

LG has also been expanding its smart home business, including acquiring a majority stake in smart home platform Homey in 2024.

New hardware could arrive October 13

Apple is expected to introduce its long-awaited smart home hub on October 13, alongside a refreshed Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini.

The LG accessories reportedly won’t be ready for several more months, meaning the hub could arrive before the broader hardware lineup.

Apple is also developing its own branded security camera, currently targeted for next year. That would give customers a combination of Apple-made hardware and LG accessories designed to work within the same smart home ecosystem.
