Apple Music is getting its biggest visual overhaul in years, replacing its familiar red-and-white branding with a new black-and-white identity inspired by sound waves.

Apple officially revealed the redesign in a video, explaining how it used actual sound vibrations to create the new logo and visual elements.

The updated branding is already visible on Apple’s website, while the redesigned app icon will reach iPhone, iPad, and Mac users with iOS 27.2, macOS 27.2, and related software updates expected next week.

How Apple Created the New Apple Music Design

Apple describes its new visual identity as “made by sound,” and the company took an unusual approach to bringing that idea to life.

Instead of creating the graphics entirely in software, the design team played audio through a water-filled container and photographed the liquid as it vibrated in response to different musical frequencies.

By placing branding elements behind the moving water, Apple captured the flowing shapes that now appear throughout Apple Music’s redesigned identity.

The company collaborated with British music producer Fred Again and acoustics specialist NEST Acoustics on the project.

The result is a more restrained black-and-white appearance that also complements Apple’s Liquid Glass interface, introduced with iOS 26 and macOS Tahoe.

For everyday users, the most noticeable difference will be the app icon. Instead of the familiar red background, Apple Music will display a black symbol on white in light mode and a white symbol on black in dark mode.

The Redesign Has Been Appearing for Weeks

Although Apple has only now formally announced the changes, signs of the rebrand began appearing earlier this month.

The new Apple Music logo first surfaced in iOS 27.2 and macOS 27.2 beta releases, after appearing in promotional materials for the recently opened Apple Music Hall venue.

A redesigned app icon followed in a subsequent beta, giving testers an early look at the service’s new appearance.

Reactions have been mixed, with some subscribers questioning Apple’s decision to abandon the distinctive red color that made Apple Music immediately recognizable.

The new branding will become available to everyone when Apple releases its next round of software updates, currently expected next week.
