Sharing podcast snippets just got a lot easier with iOS 18, thanks to a new feature in Apple Podcasts that allows you to share timestamped links.
This is a game-changer for those moments when you want your friends to hear a specific part of a podcast without having to sift through an entire episode.
Timestamped links are nothing new to third-party podcast apps like Spotify or Overcast, but they are a welcome addition to Apple Podcasts.
Given that Apple Podcasts is one of the most popular podcast apps on the iPhone, this new feature will make sharing podcast moments much more user-friendly.
These timestamped links are compatible with older versions of iOS and macOS, so your friends don’t need to be on iOS 18 to enjoy them. However, there are a few limitations to be aware of.
Currently, you can’t manually type in a specific timestamp. You’ll need to navigate to the desired point in the episode, pause, and then share.
This can be a bit cumbersome, but it’s a step in the right direction. Apple may eventually allow manual timestamp entry for greater flexibility.
Another thing to note is that the timestamp updates if the podcast continues playing while you’re on the Share screen.
For example, if you hit the Share button at 10:45 and wait until 12:30 to finalize the share, the link will be timestamped at 12:30. It’s a small quirk but something to keep in mind to ensure accuracy.
Overall, this new feature in Apple Podcasts is a fantastic addition. It makes it easier to share and enjoy specific moments from your favorite podcasts.
iOS 18 is currently in its third developer beta. A public beta is expected anytime this month, followed by a general release in the fall.
What are your thoughts on Apple finally adding timestamps to the Apple Podcasts?
